Devani lived and breathed her organization.

Was there even a chance for us in the long run?

“She’s dickmatized.” Rey chuckled, bringing me out of my thoughts. “Isn’t that what you said I did to her and why she caused you so much trouble last year?”

Devani’s dark eyes lifted to mine, and a surge of energy pulsed between us.

“Among other things, Agent King.” Devani shifted her attention to the folder in front of her. “Gentlemen, I believe I have a counteroffer to keep my affiliation with this deal anonymous.”

“Wish to keep your hands clean for your future father-in-law?” I kept my tone even but allowed the barb to strike.

Then almost instantly regretted it when a crease formed between her brows, and her lips tightened for fraction of a second. I never allowed my emotions to push to the surface in any business dealings, and this small infraction told me how much her call had left me off-kilter.

“Something like that. Now to my proposal.”

Less than fifteen minutes later, I scanned the faces of my brothers, expecting some sort of reaction to Devani’s proposal. She’d proposed to sell all of the outstanding debt to us for a dollar with the condition we make it look as if her uncles were the ones behind the sale without implicating her in any way.

She’d literally handed me everything I’d wanted for the last ten years on a silver platter.

Why?

This couldn’t be just about the case.

“One last question before we break to discuss your proposal.” I held Devani’s dark gaze.

A surge of something buzzed between us. Maybe it was all the things we’d left unsaid.

“Go ahead.”

“Why are you giving us such a large portfolio? What is it you are after?”

A calculating curve touched her full lips, reminding me of other things she’d done with them. As if she’d sensed where my thought drifted, she licked them.

“Those are two questions. But to answer, all you need to know is this saying: The foundation of a building is only as strong as its weakest links.”

“And your uncles are the links?” Nik asked.

She held my stare as she rubbed her thumb over her knuckles. “No. Sam helped with that situation the other night. My uncles are the sledgehammer to crack the whole foundation.”

Well, that confirmed a suspicion I had all along. Somehow, we’d fallen into one of her many Solon strategies.

Instead of being pissed, I wanted to find the closest office and fuck her senseless.

“Let’s take a twenty-minute recess.” Nik smacked my back, breaking the connection with Devani. “This will allow us plenty of time to return with an answer.”

Devani nodded, her expression giving nothing away.

I rose from my chair. Nik, Kir, and Rey followed. We moved into a small office, each of us taking a position at various spots in the room.

Rey spoke first, directing his words to me. “Should we have left the room so you two could fuck?”

“Asshole.”

He shrugged. “Doesn’t change what we saw. If her people didn’t know you were together, they do now.”

“We aren’t together.”

Kir moved toward me as if to punch me. “What the fuck is wrong with you?”
