“Call it deductive reasoning.”

Joshi’s jaw clenched. Fucker thought he could get to me with the walking away dig. I knew all about how much his mother and sister meant to him. I understood his need to protect them.

I’d crush anyone who dared touch Jayna or Danika.

“It looks like you fell into a vault of information about me, King.”

“I make it my business to acquire knowledge about everyone. Now back to the previous topic. You want my help. I want a favor to call in at my time and place of choosing.”

“Within reason.”

“There is no reasoning with Kings. You should know this. We take what you offer and expect more. Do we have a deal, Joshi?”

Neil sighed and then nodded. “Deal. With two manipulative assholes for parents, I hope your kid makes your life hell.”

“Now that we’ve finished the negotiation part of the evening, get to the real reason you need my help. Why is she a target? What makes her so valuable pregnant?”

Solon agents were trained to string things into long-winded conversations where they gave just enough information to get what they needed out of a deal without compromising their mission. I’d spent nearly three years sparring with the master of those games. It was the only reason I’d insisted on the favor bargain in the first place. I’d used it to gauge big brother’s intent and learn a few things about him.

Chief among them, his hatred for Joshi and Shah surpassed mine.

I waited for Neil to respond to my question, but when he spoke, it took all my strength not to punch him in the face.

“She’s carrying Ashok Shah’s legacy.”

“The fuck she is,” I shouted.

My men immediately shifted, and Noah, who’d remained almost out of sight, moved in beside Neil, ready to intervene.

On the other hand, Neil remained still, not a flinch or a slight shift in muscle.

Complete control.

Then as if I wasn’t ready to kill him, he asked, “Want to know what makes the Joshi-Shah friendship so great?”

“I’m sure you’re going to tell me.”

“Nothing. They despise each other. But they created this business tying them together.” Now the hatred he felt for the men showed through in his eyes. “It’s a business based on creating legacies for the affluent. The second he learns Devani is pregnant, he will find some way to lay claim to that child.”

“He can’t claim another man’s child.”

“Shah’s made it well known that he and his new wife are trying for a child. This baby has everything he covets—his bloodline and the right pedigree. Do you honestly think he won’t take extreme measures to ensure he gets what he wants?”

“I will kill him with my bare hands if he touches her.”

“That would require you to be with her, and you’re not.”

Brother or not, this fucker had ten seconds before I punched him in the face.

“You came here for a purpose, Joshi. Enough with the usual Solon bullshit. Get to your point.”

“You’re going to fix things with Devani and take her out of play.”

“You’ve lost your mind if you believe I have any sway regarding her work.”

Neil lifted a brow. “You cracked the queen’s shell. You have more power than you know.”

“Does she know you’re going behind her back?”
