“I will burn the world down for those I love.” I held her gaze. “Can you guess who most of all?”

“I love you, Sam.” She brought her lips a fraction from mine. “I’m an assassin. There isn’t anything I won’t do if someone fucked with the man I love.”

The way she spoke those words, without hesitation, given so freely, filled a wound in my heart I hadn’t realized still festered. For years, I’d waited, wanted. She’d refused to say it and kept me from uttering the words.

As if sensing my thoughts, she whispered, “I’m sorry I waited so long to tell you. I should have said it sooner.”

“At least, you finally caught up.”

“What can I say? I’m stubborn, not stupid.” She brought her mouth flush against mine and said, “Will you make love to me, Sam?”

“With pleasure.”

We spoke no more words, letting our mouths, hands, and bodies taste, touch, and feel on a level we hadn’t allowed ourselves to go before.

When I slid into her, there was no hard fucking but a slow, intimate exploration and memorization of every gasp, moan, and sigh. Just as our orgasms shattered over us, we held each other’s gazes knowing no barriers would stand between us again.

“Ask me.I know you’re dying to. So get it out,” Devani ordered as she adjusted herself against me.

We’d spent the better part of the night lost in each other and maybe slept three hours. Now the sunrise peeked over the distant skyscrapers, illuminating the bedroom in a wash of golden light, and we had to clear up a few more things.

“What happened to seeing this case through until the very end?”

“I’m still seeing it through, just in a different capacity. Neil is primary now.”

“Want to elaborate?”

“When I left with you last night, I changed the course of this mission. I either fucked up the case royally or accelerated the end.”

“Meaning, you made yourself a bigger target.” I leaned over her, brushing the hair back from her forehead. “You’re the prize for the beloved son, and I stole you.”

“I’m the compromised prize. Shah would never want me for his son, and neither would Joshi.”

“Exactly how are you compromised, outside of being with me?”

“I told Shah I’m pregnant with your child.”

I stared at her, not sure I’d heard her correctly. “Let me get this straight. Last night, in addition to announcing our relationship to New York society, you revealed to Shah that you’re carrying my child?”

“It wasn’t as if I intended to say anything, but he ordered me to marry Neil. He assumed my lack of caffeine and alcohol intake meant I was pregnant with his grandchild. I had to correct his error.”

Shah wasn’t even close to a grandfather to my child.

“You could have just denied it.”

A part of me wished she had, for her sake, her safety. She had no idea what she’d done by revealing this to him.

She shook her head. “No more lies when it comes to us. I told you, I’m all in.”

“It’s not that.” I cupped her face. “You’re in more danger than you’ve ever been before.”

“I highly doubt it.” She snorted and then offered me her hand. “Hi, I’m Van, Director of Solon North America. By the time I turned fifteen, many considered me a deadly weapon. And on my first assignment, I went into a war zone to assassinate a general.”

I could have gone my whole life without knowing that bit of information.

My kid was never following in their mother’s footsteps.
