“Let’s finish this, Mr. Carter,” I responded to Noah but kept my gaze on Sam.

He brushed a stray hair from my forehead and then pulled back, reaching for the door handle.

I scooted behind Sam.

Time to enter the very building where it all started. Where a group of fuckers had gathered and decided the fate of a little girl, where they’d plotted the deaths of an innocent man, woman, and child, where they’d organized to create a business designed to destroy the lives of countless women to create legacies for disgusting men like them.

As I stepped out in front of the steel-and-glass building, I gathered all my focus for the task ahead. The turmoil whirling inside me skated slowly to the back of my mind, and the training ingrained from the moment I’d accepted my role in Solon pushed forward.

No more emotions, no more worries. The only things that mattered were my end goals.

I was no longer Devani Patel, orphaned heiress to a multibillion-dollar fortune. In her place stood the Director of Solon North America, the assassin going by the alias Van, the woman known for using any means necessary to accomplish her mission.

Squaring my shoulders, I made my way to the doors of the building.

“Wow.”

I glanced up at Sam. “Care to clarify that?”

“Don’t think I’ve ever seen the transformation take place before. It’s quite fascinating.”

“I have no idea what you’re referring to, Mr. King.” I nodded to the doorman, who inclined his head as he waited for us to enter.

“Sure you don’t, Highness. Interesting how fast your blood went from molten to arctic.”

“I am who I am, Mr. King. You hitched yourself to my many different quirks and unique talents.”

“That I did.”

His palm grazed the curve of my lower waist and then flattened when he discovered the secret hidden under my clothes.

“You could have told me. I may not have acted like such a Neanderthal.” His fingers ran along the stitching of my protective gear, going down my spine.

“I doubt that.” I snorted. “For the record, all of my agents wear them in the field. And before you ask, mine is modified for my situation.”

“Situation?”

Instead of answering him, I approached the head of security waiting to open the elevator set to take us to the executive floor.

“Is everyone settled inside the conference room, Tucker?”

“Yes, Ms. Patel. They are all waiting. A few of the attendees are agitated about your request.”

“I appreciate your taking the brunt of the issues. Also, it’s Mrs. King now.”

Tucker’s eyes widened, then shifted to Sam, who remained silent behind me.

“So the rumors are true.”

“What, exactly, are the rumors?”

“That you gave up the company to marry Mr. King.”

Oh, those rumors.

Ever since Sam and my relationship went public, all kinds of rumors had circulated about us. Everything from he’d seduced me away from Neil for my fortune to people believing I was going through a phase and I’d return to Neil.

The thought of Sam and me falling in love seemed unbelievable.
