They’d eventually catch on that we were a permanent thing as everyone had with Jayna and Kir’s relationship and Danika and Nik’s.

“I haven’t given up anything. Marriage changes nothing.”

“Well, except her last name,” Sam added.

Tucker’s grin had me smiling. “Good to know.”

He inserted a key into a panel, and the doors to the elevator opened.

Sam and I arrived outside the conference room less than two minutes later.

“Ready?” Sam asked.

“Absolutely.” I touched my earring. “Keep monitoring and pass any information necessary.”

“We got you, Van,” Danika said. “Your tablet has all the information and will upload with additional updates as they come through.”

Then Noah’s voice came over the line. “Going silent in three, two, one.”

I turned the doorknob, and immediately an onslaught of hate barreled toward me.

My uncles, Nishant, Naresh, and Hiren, sat together on one side of the large oval-shaped table. On the other side sat Ashok Shah and a few chairs from him, Arun Joshi and Neil.

Missing were Leonard Gustov and two other European Circle of Ten compatriots. All of whom were having a nice meditative sojourn in the underground cellars at the Sonnita Winery.

And, of course, the elusive Mr. Skylar Anton. As of this moment, he sat neck-deep in a fight with the Maldivian government for causing environmental damage when his yacht entered and then capsized after hitting rocky, shallow waters in a restricted nature preserve.

I felt no remorse or guilt over what had happened to any of those men. They deserved everything done to them and more. Solon’s practices saved innocent lives, so the ends justified the means.

Maybe Solon had brainwashed me.

I scanned the room’s periphery, counting the number of personal security scattered throughout the space.

Twelve. Actually eight. Four of them were my people posing as Neil’s detail. They’d observe the players and only intervene if absolutely necessary.

“What is this all about, Devani?” Uncle Nishant demanded in English. “And why are we in this room?”

Because this is where you arranged to murder your brother.

I left the doors wide open and strode into the room with Sam behind me. Why not make it easier for the team when I gave the signal to extract the assholes?

“Hello, Uncle. It’s nice to see you too. I’ll answer your question in a moment. First, I’d like everyone to meet someone.” Sam and I made our way to the open seats but remained standing.

“We know who he is.” Ashok Shah scowled at Sam. “Are you here to gloat?”

“Gloating is for amateurs. I’m merely here as an assistant.”

Assistant, my ass.

Keeping that thought to myself, I took a breath and prepared for whatever verbal assault Shah prepared to throw at Sam.

“It won’t last. Her blood is too pure compared to yours. She’ll come to her senses and pick someone worthy of her.”

Sam set a hand on my back. “Maybe. But then again, your blood runs in my veins, and it’s as tainted as it comes.”

Okay, that was unexpected. Sam had never publicly acknowledged his paternity. And with the doors open, anyone who walked by could have heard him.

I glanced up at him. His eyes and face were completely void of any emotion.
