Just then, Cora joins me on the street. I greet her with a kiss, careful not to take off her lip gloss. “You look perfect,” I murmur in her ear.

She exhales. “Thank you.”

“Your roommate says you like me.”

She takes a step back and starts to protest. “Lisa talks way too much…”

I cock my head. “But did she lie?”

She sighs. “Well, I do like you.”

“I know.” I kiss her again. “I have the same condition.”

“It’s not a bad thing,” she says softly.

“No, it’s not.” What’s bad is how little time we have. And it’s eating me up inside.

Inside the car, Cora looks me over, taking in my clothes. “Why are you so gorgeous. It’s not even fair.”

“You like it.”

She smiles. “I do. And I’m looking forward to meeting your best friend.”

“He’s an asshole.”

“Really?”

“No.” I laugh. “He’s my best friend.”

“He has great taste in houses.”

“And friends.”

She catches my eye and a soft smile lights up her face. “And friends,” she agrees.

CHAPTER16

CORA

The party is taking place in a private home. By the time we arrive, the driveway is already tight with luxury cars and a few powerful-looking bikes. The interior of the house is decorated like a nightclub, with strobe lights, a huge bar, and loud music.

I soon abandon any attempt to follow the rapid-fire Italian flowing from the other guests, instead nodding along to the music as we navigate our way through the packed house. A waiter appears with a tray of drinks and Tristan hands me a cocktail. It’s delicious.

“Tristan Kane!” An incredibly handsome guy with sensuous features, dark eyes, and unruly black hair shouts Tristan’s name from the floor above. He’s leaning on polished railings, grinning down at us. “You’re late, but I forgive you.”

“That’s Nick,” Tristan says. “I told you he’s an asshole.” He leads me up the stairs, my hand gently cradled in his.

“Cora!” Nick gives me a classic Italian hug. “I feel as if I know you already. Tristan won’t stop talking about you.”

“Really?”

“Yeah.” Nick gives me the full force of his movie-star smile. These two were college roommates? Did they have girls scratching at the door, begging to be let in?“And I can see why,” he continues. “You’re lovely.”

“Back off,” Tristan says with a good-natured laugh.

“What?” Nick says. “We’re just talking.”

“Exactly.” I smile innocently at Tristan. “Don’t you want me to talk to your friend?”
