“Hm. Unlikely, but continue.”

I look at the beautiful man across from me, the one who tries to pretend he’s all surface, no substance, and it feels like I’m seeing him for the first time. I’ve known Art most of my life, and sure, he has his divorced club and does good things for them, but I never would have imagined he’d go out of his way for someone the way he did for Orson.

“Thank you.”

He cocks his head. “For what?”

“Orson.”

Understanding brightens in his dark eyes. “He told you?”

“Everything.”

Art’s usual teasing expression relaxes. “I can trust you to keep it to yourself?”

“Of course.” His words catch up with me. “Wait. What he went through or what you did for him?”

“Both.”

“You don’t want people to know?”

“I didn’t do it for the acknowledgment. Would have done it without even him knowing if I could have gotten away with it, but he needed a familiar face.”

“Was it bad?”

“That’s not my story to tell.”

Given what I’ve pieced together from Orson, I already know the answer. “I respect that.”

He nods once. “Wouldn’t matter to me if you didn’t.”

He’s got a point there.

“So you two … he told us things were happening. Is it getting serious?”

Even though we haven’t sat down and talked it through, I feel like it is. He hasn’t freaked out over anything we’ve done sexually, and he craves the same amount of time together as I do. If things keep up, I’m going to have myself a boyfriend or … a partner? “I hope so.”

“Good.” A dreamy look crosses his face. “More of my men finding love again. One by one, they’re growing up and sprouting wings …”

I snort at the imagery of Orson with wings. “Dunno about love, but it’s exciting, huh?”

“Sure is.”

“So when’s your turn?”

Art’s laugh is loud. “That will be the one journey I never go on.” He looks across the room, toward the bar. “Why fall in love once when you can fall in lust a million times over?”

I think of last night with Orson, that warm feeling spreading through my chest, my need to have more. “Because it feels pretty damn wonderful.”

Art blinks at me. “Come again?”

“Nothing.”

“Oooh, that wasn’t nothing.”

I stroke my beard, realizing that no, it fucking wasn’t. “Maybe I’m sprouting some wings of my own.”

“Well, while you do that, I’m going to get my pain-in-the-ass employee to put these flowers in some water.” An evil glint sparks in his eyes. “Do me a favor and blow me a kiss on the way out.”
