His smile is full of pride. “True.”

“We good?” He nods. “Great. Let’s get out of here and get some pancakes at the diner.”

“You don’t want to swim?”

“You’re not the only one who enjoys his balls where they are.”

After I dress, we walk toward town.

“You’re not the man I envisioned with Cassie.” I open my mouth to speak but he stops me with a raised hand. “But you’re perfect for her.”

“Thanks, but Cassie’s opinion is the only one I care about.”

“Right answer, hobo. Right answer.”

“Reformed hobo.”

Chapter 36

It’s not a family dinner unless at least one person bursts into tears ~ Cassie’s observations on life

“Idon’t understand why you won’t tell me what happened with my brother,” I complain as we drive toward Beckett’s house for family dinner night.

“Men stuff.”

I roll my eyes. “Men stuff like you insisting you drive to White Bridge?”

He reaches over and places his hand on my thigh. “I know you hate to drive, princess.”

I don’thateto drive, but I don’t exactly enjoy it either. Which is why I don’t put up a stink when Cedar drives. Otherwise, I would. No doubt.

I direct us to Beckett’s house and Cedar parks in the drive. He gazes up at the house and whistles.

“Exactly how rich are you?”

“I’m not rich,” I snap. “My parents had money.”

Is he with me for my family’s money? Are his declarations of love bullshit? Crap. I knew it. I don’t deserve love. It’sall a set up.

His hand on my thigh squeezes. “I’m sorry, princess. I shouldn’t have asked you how rich you are. It’s a rude question, but your brother’s house surprised me.”

His apology sounds sincere, but the truth of the matter is the Dempsey family does have money.

“Are you with me because of my money?” I blurt the question out before I can stop myself.

He rears back. “What? No!”

“Because I don’t have access to most of it. In fact, I bought the bar with my own money.” And the blurting out of information continues.

“And I’m proud of you for what you’ve accomplished. It couldn’t have been easy.” He cradles my face in his hands. “But why didn’t you use your family money to buyElectric Vibes?”

I glance away but he pinches my chin forcing me to meet his gaze.

“You thought you didn’t deserve the money because you killed your parents.”

I narrow my eyes on him. “I never said anything of the sort.”

“You didn’t have to. I know you.” He kisses the tip of my nose. “You didn’t kill your parents.”
