Is he being genuine? Does he truly believe I didn’t kill my parents? Do I – gulp – deserve love?

His thumbs glide over my cheeks. “I love you, princess. I’ll repeat myself until I’m blue in the face and you believe me that you deserve love.”

Bang! Bang! Bang!

“Are you two coming inside anytime this evening?” Elizabeth shouts through the window.

I’ve never been more glad to be interrupted in my life, but I can’t let my sister know I’m happy to see her.

“Are you going to stop being nosy anytime this century?” I shout back.

I reach for the door handle. “We better get inside before the rest of the family comes out here to see what the hold up is.”

He chuckles. “Nice try.”

I feign confusion. “Try?”

“You didn’t kill your parents.”

“I know.” I don’t know, but I’m trying awful hard to believe it.

“You deserve love.”

He’s really pushing it now. I huff and cross my arms over my chest.

“And you have every right to the money your parents left you.”

“Are you done now?”

Cedar crashing through my belief system is the last thing I need before I introduce him to my family. Granted, they’ve met him, but this is the first time I’m bringing a boyfriend to a family dinner.

He kisses the tip of my nose. “I love you.”

Damn him. He knows ending a conversation with a declaration of love means he won. I want to tell him I love him back. But I’m too annoyed with him at the moment. How dare he declare I have the right to use my parents’ money and then say I love you?

He opens my door and offers me a hand. “You ready, princess?”

When we enter the house, Elizabeth is waiting for us. “There’s a surprise for you.”

Cedar sighs. “My parents are here.”

My eyes widen and my eyebrows fly off my forehead at his declaration. “You could have warned me your parents would be here today.”

“What’s the big deal?”

If it weren’t a big deal, he would have warned me!

“Ha! Ha! Someone has to be on her best behavior today.”

I lunge at Elizabeth but Cedar grabs me before I can reach her.

“You’re lucky,” I snarl at her.

She beams at me. “Damn straight I am.” She glances over her shoulder at River standing at the end of the hallway.

I wasn’t talking about her love life and she knows it.

Cedar squeezes my hand as I lead him toward the living room. The living room is full of my family, but my gaze immediately lands on the older couple standing near the window talking with Beckett. Cedar tugs me toward them.
