“You can’t give up on her,” Beckett insists.

I cock an eyebrow. “I can’t? Aren’t you the one who claimed I’m not good enough for her?”

His nostrils flare as he glares at me. “I raised her since she was thirteen years old. I’m protective of her. I have a right to make sure she’s not being used.”

Usually, I’d run with this admission and tease him about his overprotective ways. But not now. I’ve got bigger problems than Cassie’s big brother.

I slap him on the back. “I know. Don’t worry. I’m not giving up on her. I’m just giving you a hard time.”

He gestures toward the tiny home. “But if you’re not giving up on her, why are you packing to go away?”

“Who said I’m going away?”

Rowan smirks. “You have a plan.”

“Of course, I have a plan.”

“How can we help?”

Perfect. I knew they’d come on board when they realized I’m not leaving. And I do need help.

“Do you have Cole’s phone number?” I ask Rowan.

“Cole? Ellery’s baby daddy Cole?”

“I think he prefers to be referred to as Ellery’s fiancé.”

Beckett is already handing me his phone. “Here. I have no idea why you need Cole’s phone number, but here it is.”

“It’s all part of my master plan.”

I keep my response mysterious. The fewer people who know what I’m intending to do the better. This town doesn’t keep secrets well and the last thing I need is Cassie knowing what I’m up to before I’m ready.

I want the entire scheme worked out into the tiniest details before I surprise my princess. She won’t be able to say no when she finds out what I’ve got planned for her.

Chapter 40

Take what you want before someone else steals it away ~ Cassie’s rules for life

Diva yips while running circles around my legs as I make my way to the front door.

“Yeah. Yeah. We’re going for a walk.”

The last thing I want to do is go for a walk with my dog – I’d rather spend my afternoon wallowing in my heartbreak the same as any normal heartbroken woman – but I want to clean her pee and poop out of my carpet even less.

I open my apartment door and she rushes out.

“Gee. I didn’t realize you needed to go this badly. I’m sorry.”

She wags her tail as I follow her down the stairs and out of the building. Once she’s done her business, she continues down the street.

“Good afternoon,” Petal greets with a wave but instead of continuing on her way, she makes a U-turn to follow us.

I sigh. Since Cedar and I broke up a few days ago, the townspeople have left me alone. I expected them to congregate en masse in the bar and lecture me about what a fool I am. But it’s been crickets thus far.

It appears my peace and quiet is officially over. I glance over my shoulder and notice all of the gossip gals are now following me. Yep. No more peace and quiet for Cassie.

“What do you want?” I ask. You can call me all kinds of names but timid is not one of them.
