“Fixed? She’s not defective!”
“The last time she was in heat, she tried to hump my leg for three days straight.”
“You’re hot. You can’t blame her for wanting a piece of you.”
He ignores my thinly veiled innuendo. “And you didn’t get her fixed because?”
“I couldn’t do it. I took her to the vet, and she started crying and I thought she’s lost enough in her life. Isn’t losing a leg and an ear enough to sacrifice? She doesn’t need to sacrifice her ovaries, too.”
“And her uterus,” Lilac adds.
I wring my hands. “What do we do? Do we heat blankets? Boil water?”
Juniper rushes into the house with Maverick following her. “I’ve got this. You go ahead and do your you-know-what.”
Maverick picks Diva and her bed up and they leave as quick as they came. I stare after them.
“Shouldn’t we go with them? Our baby’s having babies.”
“A dog has puppies, not babies.”
I roll my eyes at Lilac. “I wasn’t being literal.”
“Is the party happening here now?” Ashlyn asks as she strolls inside our house. She’s not alone. My sisters as well as Aspen and Ellery follow her inside.
I throw my arms in the air. “I give up. I’m never throwing a party again.”
“What party?” Cedar asks.
I point to him. “A party to celebrate your one year anniversary in town.”
“I thought we were celebrating Cassie’s engagement,” Olivia says.
I snort. “Joke’s on you. I’m not engaged.”
Cedar clears his throat and lowers to one knee. “I planned to do this while we were alone.”
We’re hardly alone now.
“Cassandra Claire Dempsey, will you marry me?”
As I look around our tiny house living room, I realize I’ve been had. Tonight’s party wasn’t kept a secret from Cedar. It was kept a secret from me.
“Was tonight a surprise engagement party?”
He smirks. “Maybe.”
“But I thought I was surprising you.”
He shrugs.
“We’ve known each other exactly one year today.”
“I’m aware.”
“It’s too early to get engaged. People wait years after meeting each other to get engaged.”
He clasps my hands in his. “When have we ever done things the way other people do them?”
