“You ready?” I ask Cedar as I enter the living room. It’s just another Friday night, Cassie. Nothing special. Act normal.

“No,” he grunts.

Shit. How am I going to persuade him to go to the bar if he’s not in the mood? Sometimes I forget Cedar was a loner when I met him.

“I thought we were going to the bar. It’s Friday night.” I don’t sound too desperate, do I?

“We can’t go.”

Alert! Alert!

“Why not? Are you not feeling well?”

“I’m feeling fine, but someone else isn’t.” He points to where Diva is laying in her bed panting as if she just chased one of Forest’s squirrels through the backyard.

I drop to my knees. “What’s wrong, my precious girl?”

I pet her behind the ear and she whines in response. “Have you been eating cat poop again?”

Don’t laugh. It’s a thing dogs do. At least Juniper explained as much when I complained to her my dog was defective. After she finished laughing at me.

“I don’t think it’s cat poop,” Cedar says as he kneels next to me.

“What do we do? Do we take her to the vet? The vet’s over an hour away.”

“Send a message to Juniper. She’ll know what to do.”

I don’t send a message to Juniper. I send an SOS to the entire family who are waiting for us atElectric Vibes.

“What do we do in the meantime?” I ask as Diva goes to town on her genitals. I nudge her snout away, but she snaps at me before returning to the task at hand.

Cedar pulls me to my feet before hauling me into his arms. “She’s going to be okay. Don’t worry.”

I shove him away. “Telling a woman not to worry is the equivalent of telling her to calm down.”

He raises his palms up and backs away. “Message received. How about a cup of tea?”

“What am I? English now? I don’t drink tea. Do we even have tea in the house?”

I start pacing our tiny living room. “What are we going to do? Diva’s sick. What if she’s dying?”

“Diva isn’t sick or dying. She’s having puppies.”

I squeal at Lilac’s explanation and whirl around on her.

“What are you doing here?”

“You sent out an SOS to the family. I was closest to your house.”

“But you’re not Juniper.”

“I’m aware I’m not Juniper. Why do you want her?”

I motion toward my fur baby. “Because there’s something wrong with Diva!”

She kneels next to the dog bed. “I told you. There’s nothing wrong with Diva. She’s having puppies. It’s perfectly natural.”

Cedar scratches his beard. “I thought you were getting Diva fixed.”
