The diner was empty of customers except for the four of them. Watching her fictional pair, she knew exactly what plans they had for the rest of the evening. Alex took notice of even the smallest of Blake’s gestures. Blake, uncharacteristically quiet, sat close to his love, as he playfully ran his hands through her hair.

Unusually content, she took another sip of her coffee and leaned back in the booth. Out of the corner of her eye, she glanced at Kenn. He too seemed lost in his own thoughts. She whispered in his ear, “A penny for your thoughts.”

His face went from a contemplative look to a slight, almost sly, smile, starting with his lips and continuing on to the corner of his eyes, making him look more boyish than usual.

“Oh, I really don’t think you want to know.” He gently placed his hand on her thigh. She involuntarily gasped in response to the warmth, tenderness, and the sensuous pleasure of the touch.

“I can’t tell you now,” he said, winking. “But I promise to let you in on my thoughts the moment we leave.”

“Hmm, sounds provocative.”

He took a long, deliberate gulp of his coffee, picked up the check, glanced at it, and then casually tossed several bills on the table as the tip. He quickly headed toward the cash register to pay for all four meals. Alex and Blake rose slowly, still gazing into each other’s eyes and now holding hands. She rose from the booth, too, her eyes more concerned with every move Kenn was making than what the heroine and hero of her novel were doing.

Kenn turned after paying, walked up to her, and wrapped one arm about her waist. She felt her body slowly sink into his, an unexpected second wave of sensuality rushed over her. She savored the intimate familiarity that comes to couples with ease after they’ve spent time together. How could this have happened so quickly?

While she hadn’t thought they had spent that much time together, she quickly recalled the cadence, the pace, and the perfect timing they’d experienced the past several weeks teaching together. They went from adversaries to true partners, she thought—and dare she even think it—even more. And they did that in a relatively short amount of time. The prospect she could be entering a new level in this relationship on both the emotional and physical planes both excited and frightened her.

Once outside the diner, Alex and Blake walked arm in arm gently staring into each other’s eyes, softly touching the other’s cheek. Blake tenderly lifted Alex’s long hair, stopped momentarily, and sensuously kissed her neck. Just watching the scene ignited something in JJ that had lain smoldering for years. Her characters were so in love, and she was so very delighted for them. She was ready to have that type of relationship with Kenn.

Wrapped in Kenn’s arms was an experience she had not expected but welcomed. He slowed his pace.

“We’ll let them get a little ahead of us,” he whispered. “I don’t think they even know we’re behind them.”

“You’re thinking again, Professor Cooper.”

“Yes, I am. But I’m hesitant to put my thoughts into words. I don’t want you to get the wrong idea.”

He pulled her closer, kissing the top of her head. Goosebumps ran down her arms, an electric shock shooting through her body. All from a simple kiss on top of the head.

He stopped, turned her so they were facing each other, and kissed her on the lips. Hesitantly at first, but when she didn’t protest, it grew more passionate. She returned the ardor with a desire not to let the moment end.

They stood there exploring each other, discovering the delights of the other, neither of them wanting to stop, hungry for more. She finally admitted she had an appetite pent up inside her.

Chapter 40

Kenn and JJ stood outside the door of his home. She wasn’t exactly sure how they’d got there. It didn’t matter. Kenn held her close with one arm as his other hand unlocked the door. His tenderness coursed through her body.

Pushing the door open, he looked down at her and quietly affirmed, “This feels so right.”

She looked at him, wrapped in a sense of peace and sensuality, and nodded. “Yes, yes it does.”

He led her through the living room and hallway and into his bedroom. She paid scant attention to the darkened room. Instead, they embraced again, melting into each other with an ease and familiarity of two people who had known each other forever. At that moment, she couldn’t even think of what her life was like before he’d entered it.

Kenn’s lips gently caressed her neckline as she ran her hands through his hair. Cupping his strong hand behind her neck, he looked down at her with a tenderness that she realized had been missing from her life. In the instant she looked deep within his eyes, as if searching his soul, his lips gently brushed hers. Soon the easy touch pressed into a more sensuous kiss.

Parts of her body responded with exotic feelings she had forgotten were even possible. They were locked in this passionate stance for a few moments. Then he reached down to unbutton her blouse, purposely and ever so slowly brushing his hands across her breasts. Chills ran down her body. She involuntarily, unconsciously spread her legs a bit, already gripped in physical anticipation of what lie ahead. She gasped and closed her eyes. It had been ages since a man had touched her in this way.

She reached down, gently undressing him, starting with his buttons, and continuing with his pants. He, in turn, removed her skirt. His lips again explored her mouth. Before she realized it, they were in the bed, their bodies tangled together, each discovering the delight of stirring the other to near frenzy.

His hand quivered momentarily before he massaged her breasts. He lowered his head and burrowed deeply and securely into them. She moaned breathlessly, feeling an orgasmic seismic reaction down into her pelvis.

Her heart felt as if it would burst, as her pelvic area rose in response. Kenn’s fingers moved slowly downward, gently caressing and teasing the area.

She lost herself in him, delighting in the slow sensuality. When Kenn shifted his position and tentatively entered her, she gently encouraged him. The action gave her a sacred joy, a moment of bliss transcending any emotion she’d ever felt. She reveled in the hallowed feeling of Kenn inside her and the spiritual sanctity of the moment.

The morning light woke Kenn. He turned to find JJ leaning on an arm gazing at him. “You look peaceful when you sleep,” she said.
