“Good morning, sweetheart. Allow me to make you some breakfast. I whip up a mean omelet if I say so myself.”

“How can I resist such an offer?”

The harsh sound of his phone on the nightstand jerked them out of their serene state. Instinctively, he reached for it.

Even before he had a chance to say hello, he heard his mother’s voice. “Mom, this is a bad time, I can’t talk right now,” his tone low. He glanced at JJ, who looked as if she were trying hard to suppress laughter.

“What do you mean, it’s a ‘bad time’?” He was sure that JJ could hear the conversation without straining. “It’s Sunday morning, for God’s sake, what could you possibly be doing on a Sunday morning?”

“I’m busy right now.”

“Why are you whispering? What’s wrong with you?”

He felt his brows knit as he glanced over at JJ. The bizarre nature of the situation must have been too much for her, because she jumped up—beautifully naked, he noted—and moved as far away from the conversation as possible. She stopped when she was up against the bedroom door, nearly doubled over trying desperately to suppress her laughter. Her effort was futile.

“Oh, my heavens, son, do have someone there with you?”

He stumbled over his words, trying to be non-committal. But his mother, evidently, surmised the situation quickly. “You do. You had a date last night that continued into the morning.”

“Oh son, please tell me you and JJ finally got together.”

“Mom, I really don’t want to talk about it now. It’s a very awkward conversation.”

“You can’t hide anything from your mom. I’m sure JJ’s there. Oh, Kenn this is so wonderful. I’m just so happy.”

“Mom, I really have to go.” He glanced at JJ, who was laughing even more, if that were possible. Not quite how I expected this morning to go.

“Oh, son, please give my best to JJ, tell her I can’t wait to meet her and—”

Click. Kenn pressed the “end” button, placing the phone back in its cradle.

He tried to look irritated, but one glance at JJ’s enjoyment of his predicament prompted him to laugh as well.

“So much for privacy,” he said, trying hard to contain his own amusement.

They sat at the dining room table, a full complement of breakfast foods on their plates. Kenn was in his robe and JJ in one of his long dress shirts, the hem hitting the bottom of her hips.

He watched as she ate and wondered what was on her mind. It didn’t take long for her to reveal it.

“I guess last night proves I’ve been a fool. But it also changes our relationship now.”

“I know. I hope you agree it changes it for the better.”

She looked at the ceiling. Her hesitation worried him. “Yes, I do agree. But…” She closed her eyes. Kenn waited for the rest of the sentence. “It’s such a big step. It’s been a long time since I’ve trusted anyone like I trust you.”

“Oh, I’m not about to disappoint you, sweetheart.”

Chapter 41

“I don’t understand it.” Alex grabbed a handful of popcorn from the bowl she and Blake shared. Curled up on the couch, they had another evening to themselves. It had become an increasingly common situation as JJ spent more time with Kenn.

“Well, Scarlett is a complex character, and the civil war era is fraught with complexities.” Blake seemed absorbed in the classic movie they were watching.

“That’s not what I’m talking about. Don’t you see it?” She had grown increasingly frustrated over the last several weeks.

“See what?” Blake picked up some popcorn. His eyes never leaving the television screen.

“I’m talking about JJ and Kenn. I’m talking about us.” She stood and ran a hand through her hair. “It appears the woman who was kind enough to give me the love of my life has found her own love.” She paused and stared at Blake. It took her a moment to realize he didn’t see the significance in the fact.
