“So why aren’t we home? That was the theory, right? She finds the love of her life and—poof—we’re home.”

He nodded. Just when Alex was sure he wasn’t paying attention, he smiled, grabbed the remote, and fiddled with it.

“Watch this, love.” His voice spewed enthusiasm. Even his hair bounced.

“The movie?”

“No, this.” He pulled her down on the couch next to him, seemingly oblivious to popcorn flying everywhere. He aimed the remote at the television and returned to a previous point in the streaming

“A commercial. That’s a commercial. You want me to watch a commercial?”

“Shh! Yes, I do. I think we’ve found our method of returning home.” He flashed her a heart-melting smile.

“I’m going to replay it one more time. Watch closely. Listen even more closely to what the lady says at the end.”

She watched patiently. She loved him fiercely, but sometimes he made little sense. She feared this would be one of those times. She couldn’t fathom how a stupid television commercial could be their ticket back to their world.

The commercial showed a typical harried housewife rushing through her day. Children. Husband. Those bratty kids again…

“What snotty-nosed brats they are. Our kids aren’t going to act like that.”

He froze in place and fumbled the remote control. “Hadn’t thought about kids yet, love.” He quirked an eyebrow.

“Well, how many do you think you’re going to want…?”

“Shh! This is the part.”

She swore his voice quivered. But she didn’t know if it was the excitement at the prospect of getting home or the nervousness of thinking about having children.

“Watch her now.”

“Yeah, she’s climbing into a tub to take a bubble bath. So?”

“Listen to what she’s saying here.” He adjusted the volume.

“Calgary, take me away.”

“Yeah so…” She strung out the last word, hoping he would fill in the rest.

“So? So?” Blake stood, his eyes wide. “If it works for her and takes her to a different place, why can’t it work for us? Why can’t it take us home? We just go to the store, buy some Calgary bath crystals, and…”

She was no longer listening. She had sprung up from the couch and run to the bathroom. “Come on, baby,” she said, as she rummaged through the cabinet under the sink. “Mama needs to get home.” She threw items about.

She waved the box of bath crystals at him when he finally caught up with her.

She watched as he ran out of the room.

“I’ll get the towels,” he hollered from the hallway.

Then she heard him in the kitchen. It sounded like he was tearing it apart. What on earth is he doing in there? On his return, he had the towels tucked under his arm. There was a bottle of champagne in his left hand and two glasses in his other.

“We might as well toast the moment.” She sensed a triumphant attitude as he stood there. A man who had a plan, confident in its success.

Flushed with the excitement of the moment, she drew the water while Blake poured the bath crystals into the tub.

“More. We need more. We’ve got a long way to go to get back home.” She tilted her head. “Actually, I’m not sure how long of a way it is in physical miles…but it sure seems like light years.”

She looked back at Blake, clearly unimpressed. “More. More. Don’t you dare be a wimp about this.”
