“Gotta go,” he said, “You want your usual Fission Chips, Blake?” Blake nodded vigorously. It always reminded him of home.

“Could I have a cup of your Primordial Soup and half a Chicken Time Warp Wrap?” Alex asked.

“Anything for the two best marketers in all of space-time continuum,” Alvin said.

“So all these people in here today are misplaced characters from the TV series,” Blake said after Alvin left.

Chapter 48

Alex dropped her pen and forgot about her homework. “I get it. I finally understand what this is all about.”

Blake stared at her. “Great. Do you care to share?”

“All of these characters are trying to get home, just like us.” Alex looked around, amazed at how many lost characters there were.

She jumped up and rushed over to the chess game.

“Excuse me, gentlemen, are you trying to get back to your world, too?” The three layers of the glass chess boards shimmered. One of the men had just made a move.

“Fascinating,” the one with the pointed ears commented. “But not good enough, Jim.” He moved another chess piece; she noticed it was a horse.

“Excuse me.” She tried again. “I understand you’re misplaced television characters who are trying to find a way back to your series. Is that true?”

The other man was about to make a move from the center board. He knitted his brow. “For the life of me, I don’t know what you’re talking about. This was the only costume left in my size on short notice at the party shop.”

“Oh, you can tell me,” she said. “I’m from a romance novel myself, and I’m trying to get back to the pages of my book.”

“Fascinating,” said the other man, “but highly illogical.”

She sighed and returned to the booth to find Blake eating his Fission Chips and watching the television. “Nobody’s talking,” she sighed.

“Can’t blame them, love,” Blake said, as he picked up a fry. “After all, we certainly haven’t told anyone.”

“You’re right.” She pursed her lips. “Of course. Now, why didn’t I think of that?”

She tried to eat, but she found she had lost her appetite, as she thought about the café full of characters—all stranded in this world. What chance do we have?

“Do you think…” She turned to Blake, but he seemed oblivious to everything but the television show. She looked to see what held his attention.

She saw a man alone on a barren planet. He opened what looked like a flip cell phone and said, “Beam me up.” No sooner than he uttered those words, he began to vanish.

Then the show cut to the next scene which showed him reappearing—particle by particle—on the spacecraft.

“Too bad we can’t do that,” Alex said. She knew she was whining, but she was truly homesick for the pages of her own book.

“That’s it, love.” Blake’s outburst startled Alex. “You’re a genius.”

“I am? What did I say?”

“Come on, we’ve got a de-particlizer to operate.” He grabbed her by the arm and headed for the kitchen area. He peeked in.

“Everyone is busy filling orders and the de-particlizer isn’t being used. This is our chance to get home.”

This is the man I love, she thought, as he rapidly explained the plan to her.My hero. She loved everything about him, from his unruly hair to his thoughtfulness.

She nodded her readiness. Her body tingled with excitement.Home, finally.

He took her hand and led her very quietly into the kitchen. She was astounded at the flurry of activity. He directed her attention to a small table that held a large gun.
