“I’ve been stepping over your bullshit for a week,” Brynn complains as soon as I open the door to let her in.

She’s been texting me all week about what happened the night of my birthday, and until now I’ve been successfully blowing it off. I can see she won’t be leaving before I tell the truth.

“And don’t give me that ‘Nothing’s wrong. I just miss Reid’ crap,” she continues, “I know you, Maks. You’re tougher than that.”

I let out an exasperated sigh and head to the kitchen to make us a drink. When I come back, I’m ready to talk.

“You just got back from Suppato’s that night. Did something happen?” Brynn asks, accepting the drink I brought.

Yeah, you could say that.

I’m searching for a good way to answer her question, but she continues dominating the conversation.

She sits in her usual corner of the sofa. “Because I swear if that dickhead Cal did something to you, I will kick his ass myself.”

I sit on the other end. “Brynn, leave it alone.”

She holds her glass at her mouth, stopping to speak before she takes a drink. “I’m not afraid of him. I don’t care who his father is.”

Brynn knows about Cal and the fuckery he’s been planting in my head. She’s not a fan, obviously. She wasn’t a fan of Reid at first either.

“It’s not what you think. He didn’t… It wasn’t…” God. I can’t even talk about it without getting flustered.

“So, this is about Cal.”

I sigh then take another drink, refusing to answer her. I feel a flush creep up my neck and into my cheeks. She has no idea she’s almost to the finish line.

She studies me for a second before understanding dawns on her. “Oh my God, the hoodie.” She sets her drink on the coffee table and sits up straight, completely focused. “Something happened. With him.”

“Brynn.” My mouth falls open at her accusation—or her observation. Whatever she wants to call it. I should’ve known I couldn’t slip anything past my best friend.

“Makenna, look, I’m the last person to judge. I knew it would happen sooner or later. I just didn’t think it would be with him.”

“Well it wasn’t on purpose.” I can’t even look her in the eye.

“So, something did happen? I knew it.” I feel her glaring at me as she reaches for her drink.

I glance over at her. “You did not. You were ready to throat punch the guy.”

She swirls the ice around in her glass. “So much for thinking he didn’t like you.” She takes a sip. “You fucked him?”

“No!”

“Sucked his dick?”

“No. God, Brynn.”

Her eyebrows bunch together. “Soooo… you’re upset because you didn’t sleep with him, then?”

“He finally talked to me. Like, face-to-face. No masks. No angry outbursts over his shoulder. No cryptic messages on Hallmark cards. Like… actually spoke words.”

“So, what happened? Did he say something bad? Was he being an asshole? Did you ask him why he’s always such a dick?” She throws a hundred questions at me at once.

I take a deep breath, deciding which to answer first. “I didn’t get around to asking him anything. I lost control, Brynn. It all happened so fast. Before I knew it, he was—” I can’t say any more. I know all too well what the memory does to my body. I’ve relived it a dozen times in my dreams. Then I remember the rest of the story. “He treated me like an easy fuck. He even practically said as much.”

So, he said I made it easy to fuck me. It all means the same thing, right?

Her mouth falls open. “There’s no way he meant it, Maks. Anyone who knows you knows better than that.”
