“The three of you ambushed him and really didn’t give him a choice.” Georgia laughed. “Plus, I think Charlotte’s input helped.”

“Now, all I need to do is talk to George at the hospital and make sure it’s okay if she’s in the operating room.”

“He admires and respects all of you, so I’m sure he will. Plus, he loves Ella.”

The entire family gathered in the living room at Nathan’s house and yelled happy birthday to Ella as she walked down the stairs. The look on her face was priceless, and even more so when Nathan told her we were all taking her to Disneyland.

“We’ll meet you guys there,” Simon said.

“You’re not following us?” Nathan asked him.

“My mom called last night when they got home from the cruise and asked if we could pick her up on the way. I guess Curtis isn’t feeling well.”

“That’s too bad. He probably picked up a bug or something on the cruise ship,” I said.

“Yeah. Probably.”

“Hey. Are Celeste and Nora coming?” I asked Nathan.

“Yes. They’re meeting us there.”

The day spent at Disney would be one none of us would ever forget. The fun, the laughter, and the smiles on the children’s faces were memories that would stay with us forever.

“Aunt Barb, do you want one of us to check out Curtis?”

“Uh, no, Jackson. He’s just got a stomach bug. He’ll be fine.”

“Okay. Let us know if you change your mind.”

The following evening, we were sitting around the bonfire, drinking and strumming our guitars while the girls were inside talking about the wedding.

“I figured you’d all be out here,” Aunt Barb spoke as she walked over to us.

“Hey, Mom,” Sam said.

“Aunt Barb, how is Curtis feeling?” Christian asked.

“He’s fine.” She sat down next to Shaun. “Where are the girls?”

“They’re inside talking about the wedding,” I said.

“Mom, what are you doing here?” Simon asked.

“I can’t come over to visit my children?” She cocked her head at him.

“You just saw all of us all day yesterday.”

“There’s something I need to tell you boys.”

“What is it, Mom?” Sam asked in a worried tone.

“Curtis and I are getting a divorce.”

“What?” Simon shouted. “Why? You two just came back from a cruise.”

“Mom, what the hell is going on?” Sebastian asked.

“I don’t want to hear another word from you until I finish speaking. Do you understand?”
