“Everyone is great.” He smiled.

We ate breakfast and had a great conversation. It was good to see him again since it had been a while since he took the position of Chief of Staff at the UCLA Medical Center.

“When are you speaking?” I asked.

“Today at noon, and then I have to catch a flight back to L.A. right after.”

“I thought you were giving two lectures?”

“I was supposed to, but I have an eleven-year-old girl lying in a hospital bed with a craniopharyngioma. So, I need to get back and get her into surgery.”

“Shit. I’m sorry to hear that. That’s not going to be easy.”

“I know.” He sighed. “She’s such a sweet kid too. Have you checked in yet?”

“No. They said my room wasn’t ready.”

“Let’s go see if it is, and then we can ride together to Mass General.”

“Okay.” We both stood up from our chairs.

After I had checked in, Jamieson and I grabbed a cab and went to Mass General. After he had given his lecture, he walked over to me.

“It was great seeing you, Jackson.” He shook my hand.

“Great seeing you too, Jamieson. Your lecture was superb.”

“Thanks. Yours will be even better. Good luck, and don’t be a stranger. In fact, the four of us need to get together for dinner one night.” He patted my back.

“Definitely. Have a safe flight home.”

CHAPTER11

Jackson

After giving my lecture, I walked down to the E.R. to see if a friend of mine from medical school was still working here.

“Excuse me,” I spoke as I walked up to the nurse’s station. “Does Dr. Jonathan Jones work here?”

“He does, but it’s his day off. I can tell him you stopped by,” Carol, the nurse, spoke.

“Yeah. That would be great. Is he working tomorrow?”

“He is. He’ll be in at six a.m.”

“I’ll stop down tomorrow after the conference. Thanks, Carol.”

As I stepped away from the nurse’s station and began walking down the hall, a doctor walked out from one of the rooms and almost ran into me.

“Oh, gee. I’m sorry.”

“It’s okay.” I smiled as I kept walking.

“Excuse me, Dr. Kind?” I heard a woman’s voice call.

“Yes?” I stopped and turned around at the same time the doctor who almost ran into me did.

We both looked at each other for a moment.
