“Okay. The reason?”

“Brainstem Glioma.”

I entered the room and saw my Aunt Barb holding Ian’s hand.

“Dr. Kind. We’re here to take your patient for an MRI,” one of the transporters spoke as he walked in.

“Okay. Ian, I’ll meet you there. Aunt Barb, why don’t you go to the cafeteria and grab a cup of coffee?”

“Maybe I will. You’re in good hands, Ian.” She leaned over and kissed his forehead. “I’ll be waiting right here for you.”

I sighed as I walked out.

I opened the door to the control room and stepped inside.

“Hey, Dr. Kind. I hear you have a patient coming who needs an MRI of the brain with contrast.”

“Yes, Maria. That’s correct. I’m going to grab a cup of coffee and come right back.”

“You’re staying for this one?” she asked.

“Yeah. He’s my uncle.”

I took the elevator up to the rooftop, poured myself a cup of coffee, and leaned against the railing. I felt bad having to cancel my plans with Georgia. Pulling my phone from my pocket, I Facetimed her.

“Hey.” She smiled. “Are you on the rooftop?”

“Yeah. I grabbed a cup of coffee. They’re taking Ian for an MRI now. I feel bad about having to cancel today.”

“Don’t feel bad, Jackson. I’ve rescheduled for Wednesday at five o’clock. I checked your schedule. Your last patient is at three thirty, and mine is at three forty-five. We’ll have plenty of time.”

“Okay, sweetheart. We’ll drive to work together that day. I better get back downstairs and see what I’m dealing with. I’ll see you later.”

“I’m heading over to Alex’s for a while. Text me when you’re on your way home.”

“I will. Have fun. I love you.”

“I love you too.”

I stepped into the control room and took a seat.

“Is the contrast in?” I asked Maria.

“Yes. So now we wait.”

I sat there and waited for the images to appear.

“Jesus.” I sighed as I stared at the monitor.

“Wow,” Maria spoke. “I thought those types of tumors were only found in children.”

“They usually are. Only one to two percent are found in adults.”

When Ian’s MRI was completed, and he was taken back down to the ER, I grabbed my coffee cup and headed there.

“Well, Jackson?” Aunt Barb stared at me as I walked into the room.

“I agree with your doctor in Hawaii. The tumor is inoperable,” I spoke to Ian. “I’m really sorry.”
