I nodded. “Good. I like working with them, and we work well together.”

Given the importance of the project we were overseeing, I was relieved to have them on my team. Already, I began to make notes of everything I was going to need to prepare, and the slew of meetings we would have once we touched the ground.

And I still needed to pack. At least the weather would be nice. That was a bonus.

Serena stood up and tossed her hair over her shoulders. “You’re going to be leaving tomorrow. All of the travel arrangements have been made, so you don’t have to worry about anything.”

“Except packing.”

“I can come over and help you pack if you want.”

“It’s okay. I can handle it.”

Serena waved my comment away. “You’re going to have a generous spending allowance while you’re there, don’t worry.”

“It sounds like you’re trying to get rid of me.”

“Never.” Serena shook her head and strode towards the door. “I’m definitely going to miss having you around here, but you’re in good hands. And Killian is going to be there in case anything goes south.”

My smile fell, and I stared at her. “Did you just say Killian is going to be there? Does he really need to be there, Ser?”

“I did. Whoops, would you look at the time? I’ve got to go. I’ve got…deputy manager stuff to do. Byeee.”

“Serena,” I called out, as she walked away. “You did that on purpose.”

“No idea what you’re talking about,” Serena replied, without looking at me. “Talk later.”

I glared at her back through the glass doors. Then I slumped back into my seat and buried my head in my hands. While I was excited about the prospect of being involved in a project from its infancy to execution, the last thing I wanted was to be stuck in an exotic location with none other than Killian Holt.

My boss, the man I hated…and the man I had a weird secret thing for, in spite of my best efforts to convince myself otherwise.

Miami was only going to make ignoring my attraction worse, I was sure of it.

Miami was going to involve beaches, cocktails and a half naked Killian strutting around or lounging by the pool.

I was only human after all.

Serena had left that little detail out on purpose, knowing the disdain the two of us had for each other. Considering we all worked for the same company, I was sure that Serena wished we could put our differences aside and behave professionally. For the most part, I did try, and there were times when I almost forgot what a prick Killian was.

Until he opened his mouth to speak and I just couldn't help but fire back at him all the time.

Suddenly, I wasn’t as excited about the trip as I should’ve been.

Killian would certainly find new and creative ways to irritate me by trying to rain on my Miami parade.

Why was he even going on the trip when we were only staying a few days?

As CEO, I was sure he had better things to do than babysit a team of professionals while on site. Unfortunately, I could no more prevent Killian from going than I could figure out a way to squash these feelings that I have for him.

“We should go over a few things before we leave.” Killian materialized in my doorway, as if I had summoned him, looking especially good in his gray suit, casually leaning against the doorframe. I absentmindedly wondered what it would be like to be wedged between him and the doorframe.

“You know most people knock.” I looked at him and rolled my eyes. “Or they send an email to schedule a meeting.”

Killian chuckled, stepped into the room and let the door fall shut behind him. The stillness of the air in the room, with the two of us alone in my office, with the door shut did not escape me.

“I’m the CEO. I don’t need to do any of those things.”

I opened up my laptop and ignored him. “Rules exist for a reason, you know.”
