She was a lot stronger than I gave her credit for, but I wasn’t sure it was enough.

In a male dominated field, as much as it pained me, she couldn’t just be good. She had to be leaps better than the men to be taken seriously.

Meghan needed to be invincible, at the top of her game.

If she had any hope of surviving in the company and continuing to rise through the ranks, she needed to not only be able to hold her own, but she also had to be able to push back against all of the naysayers, and everyone who wanted to tear her down. And there was no shortage of limp dick men, waiting at the ready to do so. While a small part of me felt guilty for being as hard on her as I was, I knew I was ultimately in her corner, even if she didn't know it. She’d thank me some day for being so hard on her.

For making her as tough as she needed to be.

Or she would end up hating me. Not a far cry from where we currently are.

Either way, it didn’t matter so long as she got the chance to do what she did best.

I crossed the street with the lingering amusement of our interaction slowly fading, and Meghan on my mind. Thoughts of her stayed with me on the elevator ride up, and as I sat down behind my desk and waited for my laptop to come to life.

There was that damn Meghan itch again.

MEGHAN

“Please tell me you’re joking.”

Serena sighed and took a seat on one of the chairs opposite my desk. “I wish I was, but I’m not.”

“You’re the deputy manager. Shouldn’t you be the one to go to Miami?”

Serena sat up straighter and blew out a breath. “Yes, I should, but one of our other projects hit a snag, and I need to be here to figure out a way out of this mess.”

“Well then, I’ll trade places with you.”

Serena raised an eyebrow. “You want to attend meetings about stock markets and focus groups?”

I closed my laptop and looked directly at her. “Ser, you know I hate flying.”

Serena leaned across the table and patted my hand. “Yes, but it’s going to be on the company’s private jet. You get to travel in style, with snacks! Really, it won’t be that bad.”

I grimaced. “It really won’t make a difference.”

Being up in the air, with no safety net, always made me break out into a cold sweat. I hated it.

Knowing I was flying out there to help work on the biggest project of my life was no exception.

Even if I was excited that Serena had chosen me to be her replacement.

“But you get to take Skittles. I made a few phone calls and made sure that the hotel you’re staying at can accommodate him.”

Some of the knots in my stomach unfurled. “Serena, you really didn’t have to do that. Thank you.”

“And you can take him on board the jet with you. He can stay in the room in the back during the flight,” Serena added, with a grin. “Doesn’t that make you feel better?”

I leaned back in my chair and exhaled. “Actually, it does. You’re the best.”

“And you’ll have a good team there with you.”

“So who’s the final Miami dream team then?”

“Donna, Rachel, Brent, Chase and Jessica.”
