“There’s a lot of things I need to start doing when we’re alone,” Meghan muttered, mostly to herself. She took a few steps back and folded the blueprints to tuck them underneath her arm. “I should head back to the hotel and get in touch with the finance department. We’ll need to set up a meeting.”

I frowned. “Alright.”

Only it didn’t sit well with me.

Last night had rattled her, and I needed to know why.

Because I couldn’t stand the thought of upsetting Meghan. Not like this at least.

She didn’t say anything as she spun on her heels and hurried back up to the sidewalk, her back held erect. Once she rounded the corner and disappeared, I blew out a breath and scowled in the direction of the water. Then I made my way back to the hotel and made a beeline for the pool. Over the next few hours, I alternated between looking out at the water and scrolling through my phone.

All I could see was Meghan and the stiff way she held herself.

When the sun began to set below the horizon, bathing the world in hues of pink and purple, I made my way inside. It took a few moments for my eyes to adjust, but as soon as they did, I caught a glimpse of Meghan sitting at the bar by herself, in a knee length dress, staring at her drink as if it held all the answers. I placed my sunglasses on top of my head and strode towards her. As soon as I came to a stop in front of her, she looked up at me, and a shiver raced up my spine.

I leaned over the bar and gestured to the waiter. “What’s the matter, Meg? Did the book end up badly? Don’t worry, if there’s a sequel, they’ll be reunited, and there will be hotter sex scenes too.”

Meghan snorted and picked up her drink. She eyed me over the rim as she sucked on the straw, causing all of the blood to rush to my groin.

Holy fucking shit.

I still wanted Meghan.

Once wasn’t enough to get her out of my system.

After finishing half of her drink she set it down and reached for a napkin. I picked up my own glass and tilted it in her direction. “What are we drinking to?”

Meghan exhaled. “Can we not, please?”

I set down my drink and frowned. “Okay, I don’t understand.”

“What don’t you understand, Killian? I don’t want to play this game with you today. Don’t you ever get tired of it?”

“It’s our thing, Meg. It’s what we do. Don’t tell me you’re going soft on me.”

Meghan stared at me for a few seconds before she sat up straighter. “Last night shouldn’t have happened. I love working for Holt Enterprises, and I’m not going to risk my job over this.”

“I didn’t say that you should.”

“Then you need to stop looking at me like that.”

“Like what?”

Meghan threw her hands up on either side of her. “Like you want to bend me over this bar.”

I smirked. “So, you have thought about doing it again.”

Meghan made a low choked sound in the back of her throat. “Even if I have, it doesn’t matter.”

“I beg to differ.”

“It doesn’t matter because up until last night I was a virgin,” Meghan hissed, as if she hadn’t heard me. A low whistling began in the back of my head as I stared at her.

“What did you just say?”

Meghan leaned forward and cleared her throat. “You heard me.”

I stood up. “What the fuck?”
