Meghan flattened her arms over her chest. “This isn’t about you, Killian. You and I both knew what it was, so let’s not make it into a thing, okay? I just want things to go back to the way they were.”

I stiffened. “Fine.”

“Fine.”

With that, she spun on her heels and stalked off, her head held up the entire time. When she rounded the corner, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a wad of bills. I set a few down on the counter before I shook my head. In the elevator ride on the way up, I turned her words over and over in my head, but they didn’t make sense.

I couldn’t have been her first.

Meghan was a smart, sexy, funny and driven woman.

How had no man ever made her feel desirable? How had no man ever pursued her?

I swiped my hotel key, and the door clicked open. As soon as I was inside, I made a beeline for the mini bar and poured myself a generous amount of whisky. Then I looked out at the glass doors of the balcony, overlooking the water and a crescent shaped moon and rubbed my temples.

Why hadn’t she told me last night? Before things had escalated.

Knowing that she had never been with another man would’ve changed things between us. I downed the rest of my drink and poured myself another generous amount. Finally, I ran my fingers through my hair and let out a groan.

Fuck.

The reason it bothered me so much was because I liked Meghan.

I liked her enough to know she deserved more than an elevator romp for her first time.

And it bothered me to no end.

MEGHAN

“It’sgood to be home, isn’t it, Skittles?” I crouched in front of the cat carrier and opened it. An instant later, Skittles darted out and made a beeline for the kitchen. He glanced back at me, eyes wide and unflinching. I wheeled my suitcase behind me and went to the fridge. After opening up a can of cat food, I set Skittles’ bowl down on the counter and waited.

In one quick move, he jumped onto the counter, his tail swishing back and forth.

While he ate, I glanced around the apartment, a strange feeling settling in the center of my chest. Everything looked the same, untouched and pristine, and exactly the way I left it, but something didn’t feel right.

Being back in New York felt strange.

Like I was in someone else’s body and somebody’s else home.

Even being back in my own apartment felt surreal.

Had it really only been a few days since I walked through the door, excited and impatient to start a new project?

In the span of a few days, Killian and I had crossed the line, and my entire world had been turned upside down.

Was this how it was meant to feel?

Absent-mindedly, I patted Skittles and glanced around at the cream-colored apartment, with its blue leather couch, a terrace that overlooked the city skyline, and a half-shaped moon set against a backdrop of a hundred stars. With a slight shake of my head, I gave Skittles a final scratch behind his ears and kicked off my shoes. Then I wheeled my bag behind me into the bedroom.

I changed out of my clothes and fell face first onto the mattress.

Why couldn’t I stop thinking about Killian?

Or how good it felt to give into our attraction?

Days later, my skin still tingled and when I squeezed my eyes shut, I could still smell him on me, claiming me as his own.
