I stood up and looked directly at her. “I don’t want Meghan to have a target on her back.”

“You’re kidding, right? You’re always looking for ways to irritate her and get under her skin. I thought you’d be happy when I suggested that we send here since you’re the one always complaining about how she doesn’t talk to you like a CEO. Plus, this is a good business opportunity for her.”

“I know it is, but it doesn’t change the facts.”

“Which are?”

I exhaled. “Meghan and I slept together.”

Serena’s expression changed and some of the color drained from her face. “What? When?”

“In Miami. We were in the elevator, and the power went out. One thing led to another…”

Serena held a hand up, and her expression turning angry. “Are you fucking kidding me, Killian?”

“It’s not like I planned it.”

A muscle ticked in Serena’s jaw. “Bullshit.”

I didn’t like being called out by Serena especially when she didn’t know the facts.

But it wasn’t like I’d tried hard to stop myself from kissing Meghan.

I stood up straighter and frowned. “We’re both consenting adults, Serena. Stop acting like what I did was so horrible.”

“You don’t even have any idea what you did, do you? And I doubt you’d care if you did.”

“Ser, I—”

Serena held a hand up and shook her head. “You need to send her to Miami for the new branch. Meghan deserves this. She works harder than anyone I’ve ever known, and she’s the best person for the job. They can hire a security team to keep an eye out for McIntyre.”

“You just want to get her away from me.”

“You’re damn right I do. I want you as far away from my friend as possible.”

MEGHAN

“You knowyou can always come and visit.” I folded another shirt and set it down in the suitcase. “It’s a three-hour plane ride.”

“I’ll try and visit as often as I can.” Serena stood in the doorway, one leg crossed over the other, and a concerned look on her face. “Are you sure you want to do this? I thought you’d be happier about this opportunity.”

A chance to oversee one of the newer branches wasn’t going to happen every day.

I was thrilled, but I couldn’t stop thinking about what I’d be leaving behind.

Or who.

Since Serena and I had been best friends since elementary school, I knew she and I were going to survive, even if it did take some time to adapt to a long-distance friendship. However, if I were being honest with myself, it wasn’t my friendship with Serena that I was worried about. It was the budding feelings I had for Killian that had only gotten worse since our tryst in the elevator. Over the past two weeks, I had done everything possible to get him out of my system, from spending long hours at my desk to avoid running into him to spending every day working out in order to clear my mind.

Nothing seemed to work.

He was in my veins, and I couldn’t get him out.

No matter how much I wanted to.

Killian, on the other hand, was acting like nothing had ever happened between us. On the one hand, I was relieved he had gone back to being his usual snarky, arrogant self. However, there was a small part of me that was beginning to wonder if I really meant so little to him. In the course of a single night, he had turned my entire world upside down, and I had been nothing but a blip on his radar.
