“I already told you that there’s nothing.”

“And I already told you that I don’t believe you.”

I swung my gaze back to Serena’s and leaned back against the chair. “Do you have any idea what a PR nightmare it’ll be if McIntyre targets us? Think about all the bad publicity we’ll be getting.”

“You’re the one who always says there’s no such thing as bad publicity.”

“I changed my mind.”

“Bullshit.” Serena folded her arms over her chest. “I want to know what’s really going on, Killian.”

“You want to be the one to figure out how to deal with this headache? Fine. I thought you wanted to focus on managerial duties, not putting out fires.”

“It’s part of the job description, isn’t it?”

“It can be.” I swung my gaze back to the laptop, opened up a browser and began to type. “We can redefine the requirements of your job, but it’s not going to change anything. Sending Me—a team there is a bad idea. We’d be endangering them directly.”

Serena huffed. “This isn’t about the team at all. This is about Meghan.”

“No, it isn’t.”

“Killian, I wasn’t born yesterday. What kind of idiot do you think I am?”

“Is that a trick question?”

Serena let her hands fall to her sides, and she straightened her back. “I could always go to the board with my suspicions.”

“There isn’t anything to tell the board, Serena, and you know it.”

“Do I?”

“Damn it. Why won’t you let this go?”

“Because I know something is going on, and it’s my name on the company too. You might be CEO, but I care about the company just as much as you do.”

“I know that.”

“Do you? Because you act like you’re the only one who works hard in this family and like you’re the only one who has something to lose. It’s my ass on the line too, even if it isn’t my job. And I know how much this company meant to dad.”

“You don’t think I do?”

Serena held her hands up on either side of her. “I don’t know what to think, Killian. I know that you don’t let me in, and I know that, at the end of the day, dad chose you for a reason, but it doesn’t mean you should ice me out.”

I stood up and blew out a breath. “I’m sorry dad didn’t choose you.”

Serena let her hands fall to her sides and shrugged. “Why? There is no point in bringing it up. I like being a manager, Kill. It gives me a lot more leeway than being CEO, and I’ve made my peace with dad’s decision.”

Except we both knew she would’ve been more qualified.

Serena could’ve done this job in her sleep.

I, on the other hand, had to work much harder than she did.

“If something is happening, I deserve to know about it, especially if that something is going to put my best friend’s life in danger. I know you’re not a fan of hers, but Meghan is like a sister to me, and if you don’t tell me what’s wrong, I swear to God, I will go to the board with my suspicions myself.”

She had me back into a corner, and if I didn’t come up with something, Serena was going to go in for the kill.

In her own way, Serena was trying to do the right thing, and I respected her for it.
