He was looking directly at me when he said it, but I didn’t flinch. Killian may have been used to others cowering and simpering at his unflinching gaze, but I didn’t. Instead I met his gaze directly and waited for him to be the one to look away first. When he did, a murmur of conversation erupted throughout the room as he rose to his feet. Every eye in the room turned to him, a tall imposing figure in his expensive suit and million dollar smile.

Even I couldn’t resist admiring him from time to time, especially with his broad shoulders, muscular physique, and a gaze that could make any woman go weak in the knees. With a slight shake of my head, I forced my gaze away from him and picked the file up off the table. While he spoke to a few people in the back of the room, I pretended to leaf through the paperwork and waited for my heart to settle.

Come on, Meg. You know better.

Little by little, the people in the room trickled out into the empty hallway. Through the glass doors, I saw Killian walk to the other side of the floor and disappear into his office. The members of the board split into two groups, one that waited for the elevator while the other took the stairs.

A few people looked up from the cubicles before quickly looking back down at their desks.

Serena came to stand next to me and sighed. “He’s in even more of a bad mood than usual. Usually, he at least pretends to go through the paperwork first before he tries to poke holes in everything.”

I shrugged and looked up at her. “Same old Killian.”

Serena patted me on the back. “You handled yourself like a pro, Meghan. You always do. Seriously, you should’ve seen the look on his face. I thought a vein was going to pop.”

“I’m not that good,” I joked, before tucking the folder underneath my arm. “Besides, I have to know when to dial back, Killian and I walk a fine line, I don’t want to push it too far one of these times.”

“You’re the head of research, design and development and one of the best architects in the business. He’d be an idiot to fire you. Besides, what would he fire you for? Doing your job?” she laughed.

Serena and I fell into step together as we hurried out of the conference room.

Hushed conversation rose and fell around us.

In the doorway to my office, Serena lingered and sighed. “How serious do you think he was about pulling us into another meeting? I have other things to do today.”

The laptop on my desk pinged, and I cast a quick glance at the screen. “Pretty serious.”

Serena groaned. “I hate being forced into meetings with the two of you. I never know if you’re really going to kill each other.” She rolled her eyes and pushed herself off the doorframe. “Whatever. I’m going to go see if I can get this meeting canceled. I have enough to deal with without catering to my brother’s ego.”

“Good luck,” I called out, as she zipped out of my office.

MEGHAN

By the timeI ducked into the bathroom to adjust my shirt and splash water on my face to freshen up, my laptop was pinging with notifications. Already, my inbox had several emails from Killian, all with detailed but pointless comments about the project, left in bold red font, just to indicate how skeptical he was with the project.

I glanced up from the screen and glared at him through the glass walls of our offices. I debated flipping him off even though he probably wouldn't even see, but I decided against it.

Half of me wanted to march over there and demand he take over the project himself if he was going to act that way. The other half of me knew that if I did, he would take over with his usual amount of arrogance and act like it was his choice to cut me out. Considering how many months I had spent developing this idea and working closely with several departments in order to fine tune the details, the last thing I wanted was for Killian to get credit for my hard work.

The Miami beach resort was my idea, and my baby.

And I was going to see it through until the end.

With a frown, I swung my gaze back to the screen and rolled my shoulders. Over the next hour, we exchanged emails back and forth until my ears were practically ringing. Halfway through the exchange, I stood up, stretched my arms over my head and squeezed my eyes shut.

Except I couldn’t stop imagining Killian sitting behind his large desk, with one leg crossed over the other, and a wicked gleam in his eyes. I couldn’t help wondering if he’d imagined me sitting in my office, in my tight pencil skirt.

Had he imagined what it would be like to push me over the desk, and run his hands up my skirt?

With a groan, my eyes flew open and I sat back down at my desk, pulling the chair closer.

I was not going to let the attraction felt for him get in the way of my job.

Especially right now.

Because there was a lot more at stake.
