My vision turned red, and my lungs burned.

I raced across the street, narrowly avoiding being hit by a car.

The man who had a hold of her, had a cloth he was trying to cover her mouth with. She was kicking and screaming and fighting like hell. The second man pulled a knife out moving towards Meghan as she wrestled, to break free.

As I reached them, I barreled into the man with the knife, grabbing him around the waist and launching us both hard into the ground and clear of Meghan. I immediately let go of him and spun around looking for Meghan while the first man who had grabbed her tackled me with the full force of his weight.

We rolled around on the pavement, each trying to get the upper hand. He landed a punch squarely to the jaw and pain blossomed behind my eyelids, but I didn’t care.

As we rolled, I gained the upper hand, seeing red, I landed punch after punch, beating every last bit of fight out of him. Instinct took over and I didn’t stop until he went limp.

Meghan screamed out in pain, and adrenaline pumped through me, and I spun around, and switched my attention to the man with the knife, holding Meghan up by the back of her hair. The man released her in order to come barreling towards me. Meghan swayed on her feet, and I lurched forward, catching her before she hit the pavement. As I laid her down on the pavement, the second man grabbed me in a choke hold from behind.

“Killian!” Meghan screamed.

We tumbled backwards, each trying to gain the upper hand as we rolled on the ground. So long as Meghan was alright, I didn’t give a shit what they did to me.

The assailant, thankfully, wasn't very skilled with his knife, and he narrowly missed gouging me as I wrestled with him. Gaining the upper hand, I wrapped both arms around his neck and used every ounce of energy I had to keep him in a headlock. My assailant bucked and squirmed against me until he began to pant, loudly. I squeezed hard, waiting for him to go slack. As his hands fell from his neck and he started to lose consciousness, I growled and let the man fall back to the pavement, he pitched forward and crumpled into an exhausted heap on the ground. I jumped over him, sprinting frantically towards Meghan.

I heard police sirens wailing in the distance. Meghan sat up, groaning in pain.

Purple and blue bruises were already forming on both her arms and legs.

She weakly pushed herself up onto her elbows and coughed. Blood dripped down the side of her face and underneath her dress, staining the pavement. Heart hammering wildly against my chest, I scooped her up into my arms and darted off in the direction of the car, narrowly avoiding the oncoming traffic.

I wrenched the back door of the car open, and I set her down in the back and examined her. “Where does it hurt? Where are you bleeding? We need to try and stop the bleeding.”

Meghan gripped my arm. “I think one of those assholes stabbed me.” She pulled her dress up examining her wound.

I clenched my jaw. “I’m going to fucking kill them,” I growled. “Alright, you’re ok. You’re going to be ok. It looks like it’s your hip, did they get you anywhere else?” I was half talking to myself, frantically searching for additional wounds. Praying there wasn't one on her stomach or back or anywhere that wouldn't have punctured a major organ, or artery.

Meghan shook her head “I think it’s just this one.” She threw her head back and groaned, her face looking pale. “Killian, I have to tell you something. ”

I swallowed and ignored the lead in the pit of my stomach. This was a lot of blood, this was not good.

She closed her eyes, her grip weakening.

“Meghan? Stay awake. What do you have to tell me, baby?”

Without waiting for a response, I ripped off the bottom of her dress and wadded it up over her hip, in an effort to stop the bleeding.

Meghan’s eyes fluttered, half open, and she gave me a pained smile, her hand cold and clammy against mine. Her eyes fluttered shut again.

Fuck, why didn’t I just send her back to New York when I had the chance.

Carefully, I eased her back and got into the front of the car. As soon as the door clicked shut, I pressed down on the gas and lurched forward.

I glanced at Meghan in the rearview mirror, her eyes were still closed. I stepped on the gas as I ran through every stop light between the branch and the hospital. Once I reached the parking lot, I screeched to a halt, wrenched the car door open and scooped her up, running into the hospital.

For once in my life, I had no idea what to do.

And it terrified the shit out of me.
