Conversation rose and fell around me.

I pried one eye open and bright light blinded me. With a groan, I forced both eyes open and waited for my vision to adjust. Once I shifted, I noticed the pulsing in my head, forcing me to squeeze my eyes shut. Spots danced in my field of vision, and my head felt heavy.

A cold hand touched my forehead, and I sighed. “Easy does it, Meg.”

One eye flew open then another, and when my vision came back, Killian was leaning over me, a furrow between his brows, and a bruise underneath his jaw. As soon as our eyes met, he breathed a sigh of relief and lowered his head. Slowly, he pressed a kiss to my forehead and a smile tugged on the corner of my lips

“Meg? The last thing I remember is you calling me baby.” I coughed, making my head pound harder. I winced.

“Well you were very delirious, you must have been having hallucinations.”

I peered up at him feeling safe and warm. “It’s ok, you don’t have to own up to it, I won’t tell,” I smiled deviously, which made my head pound more. “Where am I?”

Killian cleared his throat and drew back. “You’re in the hospital. You lost a lot of blood.”

I winced and gingerly pushed myself up on my elbows. “Did you get them?”

Killian’s mouth lifted into a half smile. “For the most part. Don’t worry, Meg. I won’t let them hurt you again.”

“I’m not worried about that.” I squeezed both eyes shut and ran a hand over my face. Then I opened my eyes and glanced down at myself, clad in a hospital gown, with a blanket drawn up to my chin, and an IV drip in my hand. A small door was left ajar, revealing a white sink and pristine tile floors.

With a frown, I cast a quick glance around the rest of the room, noticing the white floors, the cream-colored walls, and the small TV facing my bed, muted in the background. Next to the bed, an uncomfortable looking chair was set up, and when I glanced back at Killian, I realized his clothes were wrinkled.

He had been sitting in the chair waiting for me to wake up.

Was I in some kind of weird fever dream?

Killian who, as far as I could tell, always looked unkempt yet somehow artfully put together. His hair was a tousled mess, it was kind of sexy. Noticing the blood on his shirt I worriedly asked him “Are you hurt, Kill?”

“No, I'm fine. I’m just fine now.”

Killian took both of my hands in his and squeezed. “I’m going to go ask for the doctor. Don’t fall asleep again, okay?”

I nodded and fell back against the bed. “I’ll try. No promises.”

Killian crossed over to the door in three strides and flung it open. He stuck his head out, said something in a hushed tone and came back inside. “You scared the shit out of me for a second there.”

I blew out a breath and draped an arm over my stomach. “Those fuckers. I can’t believe they tried to attack me in broad daylight like that. Did they arrest them?”

Killian came to stand next to me and frowned. “I don’t know for sure, but we’ll worry about that later. Let’s see what the doctor has to say first.”

Through the open door, I saw nurses and doctors wheel past in either direction, dressed in their usual blue and white scrubs, with their shoes squeaking against the floor. The smell of disinfectant wafted up my nostrils, and a wave of nausea rose up the back of my throat. I swallowed back against it and squeezed my eyes shut, fighting it off.

The last thing I wanted was to be sick all over Killian.

Especially when he had no idea about the baby.

When I blinked my eyes open, Killian was still by my side, helping me sit up. “You should take it easy.”

I waved his comment away. “I don’t like being fussed over like a baby.”

“You’re not a baby, and I’m not fussing. I’m allowed to worry considering you had two men jump you, Meg.”

I snorted and folded my arms over my chest. “It’s fine. I’m fine.”

“Stop saying it’s fine when it isn’t.” Killian withdrew and gave me an incredulous look. “You’re allowed to be shaken up about this Meg. You’ve just been through something awful.”

I knew Killian was right, but I didn’t want to admit it.
