Not when it would also mean admitting that staying in Miami was a lot riskier than I thought. It was one thing to stay here when I thought I was going to have to deal with McIntyre’s goonies stopping by the office every so often and attempting to terrorize the construction crew. Since I’d hired an additional security team, I’d been feeling a lot better about the whole thing, and a lot safer.

Up until I woke up in a hospital bed a few minutes ago.

Either McIntyre didn’t care that he was outing himself so publicly, or he was certain the attack couldn’t be traced back to him. Either way, it appeared as if he was willing to take a big risk to shut us down, all in an effort to maintain his vice-like grip on Miami.

And I had walked right into the middle of his labyrinth.

What the hell was I still doing here?

“I’m glad to see you’re awake, Ms. Gomez.” An older woman with streaks of silver in her hair appeared in the doorway. She stepped in, a clipboard tucked underneath her arm, and an intent look on her face. “How are you feeling?”

“Like I’ve been attacked and stabbed.” I said dryly.

Doctor Munroe chuckled. “I’m glad to see your sense of humor is still intact.”

With that, she held a light up to my face and shone it into my eyes. I tried not to look away as she did. “Follow the light with your eyes, okay?”

“How bad is it?”

“It wasn’t as deep as we thought it was,” Doctor Munroe replied, moving the light from one side to the other. “You only needed a few stitches, Ms. Gomez, you’ll be back to normal in no time.”

Killian came to stand on the other side of the bed and took my hand in his. “What about the rest of her vitals? She was unstable when she came in.”

Doctor Munroe picked up her clipboard and scanned it. “Her iron levels are a bit low, but the rest of her blood work is fine. I’m going to ask them to prescribe some vitamins to help keep those numbers up.”

His hand was warm and strong against me, and it sent a straight jolt of electricity through me. Although Killian and I had touched before, the way he was standing over me, guarding me, it felt intimate, and it left me wondering why he was still here in the first place. Killian was, after all, still my boss, and my best friend’s brother. For all intents and purposes, he shouldn’t be here. Not unless he wanted the rumor mill to start going crazy.

Doctor Munroe lowered the clipboard. “The good news is there are no signs of brain injury. A few more doctors are going to come in and check on you, Ms. Gomez, but it looks like you’re going to be just fine. It’s a good thing your attacker was distracted. We’ll keep you overnight for observation, but you should be free to go in the morning.”

Killian turned on his charm, smiling at the doctor. “Thank you, Doctor Munroe.”

“I’ll be back to check on you later.” Doctor Munroe flashed me a smile before she crossed over to the door and pulled it shut behind her. Once she did, Killian squeezed my hand and knelt down next to the bed. He brought my hand up to his mouth and kissed it.

“If you’re not careful, I could get used to that, and we wouldn’t want that.”

“Why not?”

I twisted to face him, a furrow appearing between my brows. “What do you mean why not? You know why not. You and I don’t even like each other.”

Killian released my hand and moved to the other side of the bed. He pulled the chair forward with a screech before sitting down. “I know about the baby, Meghan. When they were frantically wheeling you into the ER, trying to figure out what kind of medication to give you, they had all sorts of questions for me, questions I couldn’t answer.”

My heart missed a beat.

Killian lifted his gaze up to mine. “You should have told me. Why wouldn't you tell me?”

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you.” I breathed. “I was really surprised. I mean we only did it once, and bam, I’m pregnant. It was a bit of a shock, I needed time to process everything. And I’m not expecting anything from you, Killian. I knew what we were when we slept together, and nothing has changed.”

Killian shook his head, clearly frustrated. “Do you really think so little of me, Meg?”

“What do you mean?”

Killian reached for my hands again and laced his fingers through mine. “I’m not planning on going anywhere. I want to be there for you, and the baby.”

“Killian, I swear to God if you’re doing this for the wrong reasons—”

“I’m not,” Killian interrupted, his expression solemn. “I’ve been waiting for you to wake up, so I can tell you. You’re not going to do this alone.”

I blew out a breath. “I…I don’t know what to say.”
