I listened to the anger in McIntyre’s voice, and the way he spat the words out at me, like he wanted to reach through the phone and strangle me. Considering I’d taken down two of his best men, with plenty of help from Meghan, I knew the knowledge didn’t sit well with him. Not only did it make him look incompetent, but it had also sown the seeds of doubt.

Thus far, McIntyre had gotten his way through bullying, through intimidation and whatever other means necessary. Unfortunately for him, I wasn’t the kind of person to cower easily and neither was Meghan. Together, we made an unstoppable team, and I could tell by the tone of his voice that McIntyre was furious he had underestimated us.

At least it would make him think twice about sending someone else after us.

Because neither of us were going to lay down and take it.

Knowing that Meghan had gotten caught in the crosshairs filled me with rage.

Realizing that standing our ground and fighting back had gotten the point across was the only solace I had in any of this. Taking on McIntyre was never going to be easy but knowing we’d done it together filled me with pride.

Even if Meghan and I were not currently on speaking terms.

I swung my chair around to face the window and listened to the rest of the message, imagining McIntyre scheming, plotting and placing a target on the company. While I had no interest in waging a war with him, it was time that McIntyre, and his associates learned that they weren’t going to be getting away with things anymore.

Sooner or later, someone was going to slip up, and it would be over.

Even a man like McIntyre couldn’t outsmart the law forever.

And when he faltered, I was going to be right there to watch it all come crumbling down.

When I spun my chair back around, my eyes landed on Serena leaning against the wall in my doorway. Wordlessly, she stepped into the office, pulled the door shut behind her and covered the distance between us. I raised an eyebrow and said nothing as I watched her. Coming to a stop opposite my desk, she paused to toss her hair over her shoulders before sitting down.

“Are you going to keep trying to bite everyone’s head off?”

I shuffled a few papers around the desk and wouldn’t meet her gaze. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Serena lowered herself into the chair across from me. “Yes, you are. It’s been a week since you got back from Miami, and you’re on the warpath.”

I tossed my phone onto my desk and made a low noise in the back of my throat. “Don’t you have something better to do?”

Serena leaned back against the chair and crossed one leg over the other. “Not really, so you can either tell me what’s bothering you, or I can stay here and bother you until you do. Either way, I’ve got time.”

I glanced up at her and scowled. “Maybe I should assign you more work to do.”

Especially if it meant keeping her out of harm’s way and as far away from all of this as I could. It was bad enough that Meghan was caught in the middle, and I couldn’t do a thing to protect her.

I’d be damned if I let the same thing happen to my sister.

“I’m a deputy manager. I don’t like delegating, but I will.”

I set the papers down and leaned back against my chair. “What do you want?”

“What happened in Miami, and what’s really going on between you and Meghan? Don’t say nothing because I know something’s been going on. I’m not an idiot, Kill, and I’ve got eyes. I told you that you needed to end things before you hurt her.”

“I tried, but when I got to Miami, and I saw her…something changed, Ser.”

Serena studied my face, and her eyebrows drew together. “What do you mean?”

I blew out a breath and stood up. “I don’t know, but things aren’t the same between us. We can’t go back. Sometimes, I’m not even sure I want to. When you told me that she was in danger, I just couldn’t stand still and not do anything. It’s Meghan, for Christ’s sake.”

And the thought of anyone hurting a hair on her head sent me into a rage.

Serena uncrossed her leg and sat up straighter. “Shit, you really do care about her.”

“I know you don’t approve, and I know there are a million reasons why I shouldn’t, including the fact that she knows how to get on my last nerve, but you wanted the truth.”

Serena’s eyes moved over my face. “This is worse than I thought.”
