“What?”

Serena stood up and exhaled. “You’re in love with her, Kill. It’s all over your face. I can’t believe I didn’t see it before.”

I snorted. “I’m not in love with her.”

Except Serena’s words made sense.

Because nothing made sense when I wasn’t around Meghan, and I wanted to be the one to make her smile and laugh and feel safe.

Goddamn it.

Why was my sister right about this?

“You are in love with her,” Serena maintained, with a shake of her head. “I have to say, I did not see this coming, and I’m usually pretty good at figuring these things out.”

“Is this the part where you threaten to cut off my balls if I hurt her?”

“Oh, I’ll do a lot worse than that if you do.” Serena folded her arms over her chest. “So, what are you going to do about it?”

“Nothing. She’s my employee, and I’m her boss. I’m not going to screw this up for her.”

“You need to tell her how you feel.”

I snorted. “I’m pretty sure she doesn’t feel the same way. I mean, she didn’t even tell me about the baby. I had to find out from the doctor.”

Serena’s hands flew to her mouth. “She’s pregnant?”

“She didn’t tell you?”

Serena shook her head, and her eyes widened into saucers. “Shit. That’s why she’s been acting weird. I thought it was just because she was busy or trying not to miss New York too much. This makes so much sense.”

“I’ve assigned a bodyguard to keep her safe, but it’s not enough, Ser. She needs to come back to New York where I can protect her. You need to convince her.”

Serena’s hands fell to her sides, and she sighed. “Let me guess, she’s refusing to come back? Insisting that it’s her decision, etc?”

I nodded.

“Same old Meghan.” Serena ran a hand over her face. “You’re not going to get her to change her mind. This is a big opportunity for her, and she deserves the right to choose. You’re going to have to make your peace with it.”

I placed one hand on either side of the desk and frowned. “How am I supposed to make my peace with the fact that she’s there, by herself, and with a target on her back?”

The thought of McIntyre hurting her, or my baby, made me want to hunt him down myself. Over the past week, I had thought long and hard about what I wanted to do, and in the end, it was knowing that I didn’t want my kid to grow up without a father that kept me from doing anything. McIntyre was trying to push my buttons and goad me into a fight on his terms.

Stepping out of line was going to cost me dearly, and I wasn’t going to do that.

Not if I could help it.

I was just going to have to trust that the police were going to do their jobs.

Serena paused, and her expression turned thoughtful. “You’re not supposed to be here, Kill. You need to go back to Miami.”

“She’s already made it clear that she’s not going to come back.”

“You don’t need to convince her to come back. Knowing Meghan, she’s not going to change her mind, and I understand why.”

I tilted my head to the side and stared at her. “What are you saying?”

“I’m saying that you should go to Miami and be with her. Your family needs you, Kill.”
