She wasmywoman.

I picked up my phone and called Veruca.

“Hello?”

“I don’t care what you’re doing right now, Ver. I need your help and I need it bad.”

She was silent for a moment before I heard her response. “What do you need?”

“I got invited to a ball and it’s my chance to really make an impact. I need a dress no one could ever turn me down in.”

Veruca chuckled slightly. “I got just the one. Come over on the night of your ball and I’ll have the whole kit and caboodle ready for you.”

“You are a lifesaver.”

“I know, darling.”

I hung up, smiling at her no-nonsense attitude. I wished I had confidence like her. It would make everything in my life go so much smoother.

The thought of having Gen in my life made everything smoother. There was even a product of my skincare that was dedicated to her. “The Oyster”.

A moisturizer that feels like nothing at all. It even had aphrodisiac properties in it. I’d had so much interest in it already and it hadn’t even hit shelves.

I hated that woman a month ago and now, I knew I couldn’t live without her.

Only question was…did she feel the same way after I basically ignored her for weeks?

CHAPTER14

GEN

The band was playinga Lady Gaga song but using the violin and it was utterly breathtaking. The event was huge, and I saw the charity he’d chosen to host a ball for was the one I was an ambassador for which meant I would be speaking later.

Just great.

My nerves were high, a ball in the pit of my stomach was growing larger and larger the longer I waited to lock eyes with Mattie.

That’s if she turned up.

I still hadn’t heard a thing from her, but I knew she’d received the invitation. My father had told me she’d received it but he didn’t know if she had responded. I eyed off the couples entering, in their finest gowns, and jewels, to show off their wealth. And yet, they would leave a pitiful donation to the charity.

If you ever wanted to meet the frugal, you’d need to meet society. They had the money and they held onto it with a firm grasp. My father was busy greeting guests who all clamored to remark on his return to society, and try and preen some kind of information out of him to stem their own rumors. He was never that daft though. God I hated society.

I stood by the bar and watched the door like a hawk, hoping the next person to walk through would be her. I wondered what she would wear. She did have impeccable fashion sense and yet she wore it in a way that didn’t overstate the fact she wasn’t wealthy but you’d never know it to look at her. Couple after couple came through the doors, but there was no sign of Mattie.

I knew she wouldn’t come. If she didn’t respond to me, she wasn’t going to come tonight.

Why would she?

I’d given her no reason to trust that I wasn’t a jealous maniac. Maybe I should have explained that I was scared to lose her and that’s why I had reacted in that manner but I went with hoping she would show me that she still wanted me first.

Was that my heart trying to protect me?

Maybe it was, but it was at odds with my head telling me that I should have fought harder. I should have showed up at her apartment or sent her flowers.

God I didn’t even know what her favorite flowers were. How could I know how to pleasure her until she was a shaky mess on the floor but not know what flowers she loved?

My chest was burning in anxiety as the start time drew closer and closer, and she still hadn’t turned up. Everyone knew you were to be here by 7pm.
