“I have no right to kill you or I would. But your sons do. I’ll leave that honor to them. And when they catch you, Apollyn, you will be sorry,” I belted out, between clenched teeth.

I thrust my hand forward, fingers splayed, and unleashed a dark stream of power, sending it careening towards him. He tried to shield himself, but it was too late. The force pounded into his chest with such powerful ammunition that it echoed around the caves. Apollyn disappeared into thin air.

The witches let out sighs of relief as the former demon king's presence faded into the shadows.

"Thank you, Sadie. At long last, he is gone from here. He can do no more harm here." Helena captured my hand in hers.

My minor success was overshadowed by the challenges that still lay ahead of me. I had made strides, only to be faced with more obstacles.

One step forward. Two steps back.

The clock was ticking. Time was not on my side.

Chapter 6

Sadie

Iwas prepared to do anything. Even conspire with enemies to stop an enemy. Yet, I knew I had to be careful.

I didn’t know the quest to find out what happened to my sister would come to this. Finding out she might have crossed paths with a shady vampire lord was definitely a game changer. Not only did I have to find her but I had to get my men back too. I didn’t know how long my attack on Apollyn would weaken him. I didn’t know how long I’d be able to keep him from regaining entry into Shadow World. After all, I was just a twenty-one year old woman and Apollyn was a centuries old shadow demon with just as much power and determination as his sons.

My heels echoed as I walked across the stone floors and turned down a narrow hallway. Aside from that, the silence down here was eerie. My half brother, Finn, was the only prisoner here, which others found odd.

In the Shadow World, there was no place for prisoners. The brothers took no hostage, and even if they did, the inmates were executed soon after being captured. But it was at my request to leave Finn alive. Good thing I did, because he was going to give me what I asked for one way or another.

Finn saw guards maybe two times a day, at max. And that was only to bring him meals, clean his cell, and make sure he was still alive. His torturous time in solitary confinement was punishment enough for me. Altair, Dominik, and Morpheus had other matters to deal with in the meantime, so killing Finn was shoved to the bottom of their list. And maybe Millicent’s theory would prove itself in the end; there was a reason I followed my conscious to spare Finn.

The keys rattled as I slid the six-inch ring from my wrist. I approached the steel and magically fortified doors and paused.

Deep regret took root inside me, but it wasn’t for Finn, who’d been locked away, but for my men. They had gone to Earth because of me. Entered that wretched trailer because of me. Because of me…they were gone. And now Apollyn was hellbent on gaining entry back into Shadow World. And worse, he seemed to take interest in me after my display of force in the cave. I had bested an ancient shadow demon. Who else in my prior coven could say that? I should’ve been celebrating, but what was there to celebrate? And who would I celebrate with?

Before I could stop myself, I shoved the key into the latch and pushed the door open.

Finn sat on the floor with his back against the wall near a window. He didn’t even look up and I noted the half circle he had drawn in the dust around himself. An empty bowl with food scraps lay to the side, which told me he’d been fed at least once today. His clothes were now in rags about him and he had shoved his shoes in a corner as if he had lost hope of ever walking out of here.

“Go away. I’m not hungry,” he mumbled without looking up.

“Well that’s a first.”

Finn’s head snapped up and his eyes when he recognized my voice. “Sadie?”

I crossed threshold, stepping inside his cell.

He rose and then backed himself into a corner. “You’ve come to kill me?”

He glanced behind me as if expecting my men to follow—as they usually did. When they were here, I was always with at least one. It was how I learned the way things worked in Shadow World. How they operated. How they led.

“No, I’m not going to kill you. That would be too easy. You deserve to think about what you did.”

“Then why keep me here!” He demanded.

“What? You never thought you’d have to pay for your crimes?”

“I didn’t kill your Aunt Naima. My m—”

“Your mom did. I know, but you sent her and she did what she did. Besides, you’re not here for your mother’s crimes, you’re here for yours. Let’s not forget how you attempted to murder me to perfect your immortality spell.”

He swallowed visibly and looked away. “How do you know I was attempting to murder you? You don’t know if you would’ve lived had I been successful.”
