Sadie

Itook a deep breath and tried to steady my trembling hands as I carefully arranged the altar with deep purple candles, my mood pendant, and the bundle of herbs on the altar. I lit each candle, inhaled the heady scent of the burning incense, and began to softly chant the spell that would bring us all back to Earth.

Altair, Morpheus, and Dominik formed a triangle around me, each placing a hand on my shoulder. A warm energy ran through me as I channeled their dark power and combined it with the celestial magic of my pendant. The air seemed to hum as I focused all of my strength into the spell. A glimmer of power flooded the air as I weaved the spell.

Suddenly, a gush of wind unlit one of the candles and the energy from the spell faded away.

"Drat!" I bit out. "Now I have to start again. Close that window first."

My men looked around in disconcertion. "There are no windows open."

I gasped, stiffening as a strong current rose in the air. It licked around the flames and jumped from candle to candle, wiping out the fire.

"What the hell?" I was taken aback by what I saw to my left: an eerie rift moving in circles. As I watched, the inexplicable power emanating from it was unmistakable and powerful. I couldn't ignore the connection I felt with it.

My soldiers encircled me in a state of bafflement. They held themselves tight and prepared to fight against whatever emerged from the darkness. Fearlessly, I shouldered through them toward the rift before they could stop me. I squinted at the figure, shielding my eyes from the blur as if we were in the bright sunlight. The image of the person was indistinct.

Dominik blocked my path. “Sadie, what are you up to?"

“It’s a type of magic I know well,” I replied. “Magic of my coven.”

“But you have no idea who that is…” Altair remarked, pointing in the direction of the unknown figure emerging.

“I can’t see them. I…” I held my hand up, casting a ray of light inside with simple magic, trying to draw the figure closer.

“Sadie!” Morpheus called out. “You shouldn’t. It could be a trap!"

But it was already too late. The blinding light descended like a heavy rainfall. Slowly, the gap closed, and standing in its place was my sister. Sydney!

I stared in shock as my eyes settled upon the figure standing before me. Her voluminous brown hair cascaded down her shoulders and her petite figure was swathed in a sky-blue jumpsuit. I couldn't believe it was her.

“Sydney!”

“Sadie. Yes, it's me.” she said meekly, her voice cracking as if it was cold. Her lips were tinged a pale blue and her cheeks red, as if somebody had pinched her.

It was her.My beloved sister. Older by only a few years, we still shared some of the same features. I ran to her, throwing myarms around her. “I thought…I thought. Oh my God, it’s really you,” I squealed.

“I’ve done something bad sister. Really bad.” Her gaze flew over me with a strange intensity, as if searching for something in me she needed to see, before settling on Altair, Morpheus, and Dominik. "A-are they...are they..." Her words evaporated as she peered at my men, her eyes widening in disbelief. She appeared to recognize them, and a wave of terror washed over her face. It was as if she wished she had never seen.

I knew she must've been terrified to see me here with three shadow demons, but it couldn't have been any worse than me finding out she had congregated with vampires in search of something that might have killed her.

"What did you do, Sydney?" I stared into Sydney's eyes, my breathing quick and heavy.

My heart threatened to burst out of my chest as I waited for her to speak. My stomach tied in knots as some primal fear clawed at me. The air seemed to stand still in time as I waited for a response to a question I was afraid to learn the answer to.

“I've raised the devil, Sadie,” she whispered meekly, her voice trembling as she stared at me in terror.

"The devil? Who?" I asked, my heart thundering in my chest.

"I've raised Asmodeus—Apollyn’s brother—from the dead.”
