Marissa and I have known each other most of our lives, but never really spent time together until she became a deputy a few years ago. The two of us are like two peas in a pod, but we’ve never been anything more than friends. Her petite frame, dirty blonde hair, and bubbly personality would bring most men to their knees, but there was never any spark between us. Probably because my heart belonged to her sister.

“Why is your sister sitting on the side of the road crying?”

“My sister? Sutton?”

“Unless you have another sister I wasn’t aware of?”

“How the hell should I know, Colt? Here’s a thought. How about you ask her?” she snaps.

“I should bring her into the station for you to deal with.”

“Are you going to cuff her?” she laughs loudly, “I don’t want to know about your kinky fantasies about my sister, Sheriff.”

I groan internally, regretting the day I told her about my obsession with Sutton. Teach me to go drinking when I’m feeling sorry for myself. Surprisingly, she didn’t have an issue with it. It seems the Flores family is not too fond of Maxwell Stanton, the soon-to-be newest member of their family tree. Marissa always said there was something about him that rubbed her the wrong way, setting her nerves on edge, but Sutton seemed happy. To their family, that was the most important thing, and if she stayed that way, everything was right as rain.

“If I had to guess, it must have something to do with the douche canoe she plans to marry,” she grumbles before sighing loudly. “Just talk to her, Colt. I’ll have one of the guys man the switchboard for calls, and I’ll figure out what she’s doing back in town.”

I grunt in response before taking a deep breath, needing to regain some control before opening my mouth. There is no telling what filthy things may come tumbling out if I don’t. Unable to stay away any longer, I get out and step around to the front.

“Hello, Colt.” Her breathy voice caresses my skin, pulling me closer to her.

I take a step forward, but she holds up her hand, halting my movements.

“How have you been?” I question.

“Fine,” she responds as she twirls her keys around her finger, a telltale sign of her nerves.

I reach up and rub the back of my neck. “Can I get at least something more than a one-word answer from you?”

“Yes,” she responds as her cheeks pink in embarrassment. “I’m sorry. This is a lot harder than I imagined it’d be.”

I smirk and take a step toward her. To my surprise, she steps toward me, wrapping her arms around my waist and burying her face into my chest.

“Was it Maxwell?” I growl, sounding harsher than intended, but I need to know. “I promise, whatever he did, I’ll make him pay.”

“It’s not your job to protect me, Colt.” Sutton pulls away, wrapping her arms tightly around her waist as she stares off into the woods beside the road. “Maxwell cheated on me, so here I am.”

The sorrow in her voice breaks my heart but is quickly replaced by a burning desire to destroy Maxwell Stanton.

“He did what?!” I shout, spinning her toward me.

Her eyes widen in surprise as I grip her chin, forcing her to look directly into my eyes. Her body recoils away from me, which is only natural. We haven’t seen each other in years, and she has no idea of the hold she’s had over me since high school.

“Tell me everything,” I demand.

“I don’t think that’s any of your business,” Sutton mumbles nervously as I hear another car coming to a stop beside us.

Fuck, of course Marissa chooses right now to show up.

“Hey sis, you alright?” Marisa eyes the two of us skeptically as I release Sutton, putting some much-needed space between us.

“Perfect.” She plasters a fake smile on her face.

Marissa’s head swivels back and forth between the two of us, trying to make sense of what’s going on.

“How about we go home and talk?” Marissa asks her sister, pinning me in place with a stare and letting me know in no uncertain terms that I’m not invited.

“That sounds like a good idea,” Sutton whispers as she strides past me.
