My mind and body are at war with each other as the magnitude of his words sink in.

“Forget about everything but right now.” He presses his lips against mine more forcefully. “You deserve to be happy just like everyone else in this world, Sutton.”

“Colt,” I groan, clinging to my last thread of control.

He leans forward, nibbling on my earlobe before whispering into my ear. “Let me love you, Sutton. Please.”

Unable to find words to respond, I nod before our lips connect. My entire body tingles as he presses his lips against mine, timidly at first, increasing the pressure with each pass. I’ve been kissed before, but it never felt like this. It feels as if my body is on fire, and the need to be closer to Colt is almost too much to bear.

“More,” I moan as I sweep my tongue against his bottom lip.

He groans, pulling me tighter into him as he takes control and claims my mouth again with a hungry and intense need that I’ve never felt before. I slide my hands into his hair, tugging gently on the silky strands to ground myself.

I feel the fabric of my shirt against my skin as he untucks it from my waistband, his fingers gliding across my skin. I gasp as a combination of pain and pleasure ignites through my veins when Colt rubs my hardened nipple through my bra, pinching it between two fingers.

I want—no, I need—more. I need to feel his lips caressing every part of me, claiming me in a way that only he can.

The shrill ring of a phone from across the room breaks the spell. My cheeks flush from embarrassment as we break apart, our chests rising and falling rapidly as we fight to regain our composure.

“I should probably get that…” Colt brushes his lips against my forehead before resting his head against mine. “I’ve wanted to make you mine since the moment you told me Maxwell cheated on you. If I’m being honest, I’ve wanted you since high school.” He pulls back slightly before leaning down and staring into my eyes. “It’s always been you. I knew it then, and I can tell you now. You, Sutton Flores, are the only woman I have ever and will ever love. You’re it for me.”

My entire body recoils from his embrace, pushing back against his arms, but he pulls me toward him, unwilling to let me escape. I never imagined that Colt Butler, one of the most popular boys in high school, captain of the football team, and my high school crush, had spent years pining for me.

The phone rings loudly for a second time, making us both laugh.

“I’m going to find out who that is, and then we can pick things up where we left off.” Colt groans as I slide out of his lap.

“I’ll be here.” I give him a mock salute as he strides out the door before collapsing onto the bed.

My cheeks are flushed, and my lips are swollen. My fingers brush against them as I remember the feel of his lips against mine. I pull my bottom lip into my mouth, trying to make sense of everything. Colt promised me forever. I can see all of it in my mind. Getting married right here in town, both our families and everyone we care about waiting for me to walk down the aisle and pledge my life to him.

Hold the fucking train… marriage? I giggle slightly but know deep in my heart that is the exact future I want with Colt. I thought I knew what love was, but the feelings I once had for Maxwell pale in comparison to the pain ripping through my body at the thought of living the rest of my life without Colt.

“Now, where were we?” Colt growls as his lips crash into my mine, nibbling on my bottom lip until I open slightly, giving him entrance.

“Who was on the phone?” I moan without thinking as he nips at the flesh below my ear and steps away, leaving me aching with need.

“Your sister.” He looks so calm as he leans back, my fingers playing with the hairs at the base of his neck. “She’s on her way over here with Maxwell.”

“She what?!” I screech, both of my hands coming between us and pushing against his chest. “They’re both coming here?”

Before I can even process all the information, the doorbell rings. Looks like I don’t have to wait any longer to give Maxwell a piece of my mind.I scurry down the stairs, trying to think of exactly what I want to say, letting my anger fester even further before unlocking the door and flinging it open.

“Morning, sister of mine,” Marissa chirps, a shit-eating grin plastered across her face. “You have exactly five seconds to tell me everything that happened last night.”

“And you have exactly three to tell me why Maxwell is here.” I cross my arms over my chest as Colt steps up behind me, wrapping his arms tightly around my waist.

“He came to the police station looking for you. It seems you never told him anything about your family other than you lived in Magnolia.”

“I was getting to it…” My voice trails off as I duck my head in embarrassment.

Add this to the long list of signs that things were not as good as I thought they were between Maxwell and me. Other than meeting my parents once after we got engaged, I never shared information about my past with him besides the fact that I had two parents who loved me and a younger sister who was a deputy in my hometown. That’s probably the reason he went to the station, hoping Marissa would have news of my whereabouts.

“No matter. He also hasn’t said one word about why you came back home with nothing but your car keys.”

“Obviously.” I roll my eyes as Colt leans down and plants a kiss on the top of my head.

“I can arrest him if you want.” He growls as the sound of someone coming up the driveway reaches our ears.
