Her eyes flew open to see Lindsay, looking very amused and clearly trying hard not to laugh, standing in the kitchen. “Sorry to interrupt.” She looked between them, her gaze landing on Georgia. “Verysorry,” Lindsay added. “But I needed to get a restock on the chocolate chip cookies.” She moved into the room, taking the long way around to the shelves where a tray of cookies was waiting.

Georgia and Scott didn’t move while Lindsay collected what she needed. Nobody said a word until Lindsay had the tray in her hand. Finally, Georgia said, “It’s not what you think.”

It was a stupid thing to say, but for the life of her, Georgia couldn’t think of anything else.

“It’s not?”

“Oh, I think it is.”

Scott and Lindsay spoke at the same time.

Georgia wanted to die from embarrassment when Lindsay started to laugh. She was going to murder her friend.

“Look,” her friend said. “It looks to me like you two have some history together and you’re obviously trying to catch up.” Georgia opened her mouth to object, but Lindsay continued quickly. “I, for one, am all for it,” she said. “You deserve a little…” Her eyes moved between them, and she wiggled her eyebrows. “Fun.”

Georgia could feel the flush on her cheeks. No doubt she was a glowing shade of red.

“But,” Lindsay continued. “It doesn’t change the fact that we are almost out of…well, everything. So as much as I’m in favor of,” she waved her free hand around, “whatever this is, maybe it could wait until after we have at least one batch of honey buns in the oven.”

Before Georgia could say anything, Lindsay turned and left, her giggle trailing behind her.

ChapterFour

SCOTT

“You should go,” Georgia told him the moment her employee left the room.

If he thought she looked sexy before, she was downright smokin’ hot now. Perched on the worktop, flour covering her flushed face, her hair mussed and pulling out of her ponytail, and her apron askew. Never in his life had he been more turned on than he was in that moment.

“I’m not going anywhere.” He took a step toward her, eager to close the distance between them once more.

The urge to press his lips to hers once more and resume exactly what they were doing was strong.Verystrong. But Scott was capable of self-control, even in the most tempting of situations.

He leaned closer, only veering at the last moment so his lips brushed her ear as he reached past her for the mixing spoon that lay next to her. “After all,” he said when he straightened to a standing position, “the way I understand it, we have a lot of baking to do.”

Satisfaction rolled through him when Georgia groaned and let her head fall back. She was just as turned on as he was, and that was another situation he had full intentions to remedy. But he’d meant it when he said he wanted to make her life easier. He knew he only knew half of it when it came to her stress level, but he’d done some asking around in the months since they’d seen each other. He knew that Georgia had taken over Sweetie Pies as well as the primary care for her ailing grandmother.

That alone was a lot.

Areallot.

With no one but himself to think about, Scott couldn’t even comprehend the weight of the responsibility on Georgia’s shoulders.

“Let’s get some buns in the oven.” He wiggled his eyebrows and laughed as he helped Georgia off the counter.

“You’re impossible.” She shook her head, but she didn’t try to send him away again.

After cleaning up their mess, they spent the next few hours mixing batter, rolling buns, scooping cookies, and even icing cupcakes. When they weren’t throwing flour at each other, it turned out that Georgia and Scott actually worked very well together. It didn’t take long for them to fall into a rhythm, and when Georgia pulled the last pan of honey buns out of the oven, the cooling racks were once more stocked with goodies.

Scott waited until Georgia set the hot pan down before he moved up behind her and wrapped his arms around her waist. “We make a good team,” he murmured in her ear before nibbling her lobe.

Georgia stiffened in his arms, and immediately Scott worried he’d moved too quickly. But the thought vanished as quickly as it had appeared. True, they didn’t know each other very well yet, and they hadn’t even spent a full twenty-four hours together, but unless Scott was reading things wrong—and he didn’t think he was—none of that mattered. They had a connection that neither of them could deny. It was electric.

He waited a moment, and Georgia’s body relaxed into his.

“Thank you,” she said. “I mean it. I don’t know if I could have done all that without your help today.”

Scott pulled her back against him a little tighter. “I told you I wanted to help you out.”
