Yet, also…

Without thinking it through, Georgia took a step forward, reached into the bucket of flour with both hands, and threw them at him.

“What the—”

He blinked, and Georgia burst out laughing at the sight of his bright eyes appearing through a mask of white on his face.

“Funny, huh?”

“You started it.”

He pursed his lips and nodded slowly. “And I’ll finish it, too.”

Georgia shrieked like a little girl and spun to run as he reached for more flour, but she was too slow and the floor too slippery from the mess they’d already made. Moments later, Scott wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her into him. She stiffened in his grasp, the breath pulled from her lungs as desire flooded through her.

He turned her so they were only inches apart, his arm still around her, holding her close. The laughter had fallen from his lips, and he looked at her with an intensity and heat that matched her own.

Georgia’s chest rose and fell against his, her breath coming fast.

With one hand still firmly holding her to him, he used his other to cup her cheek. “Georgia, I haven’t been able to stop thinking of you.”

The part of her that had hardened to men over the years melted a little at his touch and his words, because truthfully, thoughts of Scott had occupied a lot of her time as well. Time she didn’t have.

“I still can’t offer you anything,” she said softly. “That hasn’t changed.”

“I’m not asking for anything.”

It was a lie. She could see it in his eyes.

“I meant what I said,” Scott continued. “I just want to make your life easier. The minute I make things harder or cause you any added stress, tell me to leave. And I will.”

She inhaled deeply.

“And my truck doesn’t count,” he added quickly, and she couldn’t help but laugh.

Scott caught her chin with his finger and lifted it so she couldn’t look away from his flour-covered face. “I mean it, Georgia. I just want to be with you, in whatever way you can give me right now. Don’t chase me off.”

She opened her mouth but closed it again, because she didn’t know how to say what she was feeling. Fortunately, she didn’t need to worry about it because Scott closed the small distance between them and the moment his lips touched hers, she knew she wasn’t going to chase him anywhere. She melted into him, deepening the kiss.

A moan escaped her lips. It had been so long since she’d been kissed that way. About five months, if she was counting, because the last man who’d made her feel this way was the one currently responsible for it. The last time they’d been together, they’d promised each other only one night. Like a bad fairy tale, at the stroke of midnight, they’d each returned to their own lives, without each other.

This time, Georgia wasn’t going to make any such deal.

She didn’t believe him when he said he didn’t want anything more from her, but she did believe him when he said he’d take what he could get. And dammit, she was happy to give it to him, because it had been a really long time since she’d felt any of the feelings that were currently racing through her.

Scott used both his hands to hold her face and kiss her deeply as he backed her up against the baking counter. Moments after she felt the stainless steel against her back, he scooped her and easily lifted her so she was sitting.

Georgia wrapped her legs around him, pulling him closer to her.

“This is not making my life easier,” she whispered against his lips. “Now I’m going to have to sanitize everything before—”

“I’ll make it worth your while.” He nipped the skin below her ear and started to trail kisses down her neck.

She arched her back and groaned, dropping her head back.

“Ahem.”

Georgia’s head shot up at the same moment that Scott jumped back away from her.
