She goes into the other room.

I stay frozen, attempting to stay calm and giving myself a pep talk not to lose my shit. I finally go into the bedroom.

She's in bed with King Madden curled next to her. She's petting him, and he's licking her arm.

I pull back the covers, slide next to her, and turn on my side. I put my elbow on the mattress and my head in my palm. "Want to explain?"

She stares at King Madden, continuing to pet him.

"Blakely, I need to know," I press.

She locks eyes with me, confessing, "I don't want everything to return to how it was."

My heart drops. I accuse, "You don't want to be with me?"

"No! I'm not saying that!"

"Then I don't understand."

She glances at the ceiling, then closes her eyes.

I lower my voice, trying to stay in control. I state, "I can't do what you want if you aren't honest with me."

She blinks hard, then turns toward me, revealing, "I don't want to be blind or have you doing everything for me."

"Blind?"

She nods. "Yeah."

"I need more clarification."

"Okay. Before things happened, you controlled everything. Our house. My career—"

"You wanted me involved. I pushed you to choose your agent, remember?" I remind her.

She holds her hand in the air. "Yes. Let me finish."

I force myself to stay quiet, yet my blood pounds between my ears.

She continues, "House, career, relationships. You controlled it all."

"You make it sound like I held you here as a prisoner," I argue.

She tilts her head, glaring at me. "Don't put words in my mouth."

I scowl.

She puts King Madden on the other side of her and scoots closer to me. She slides her hand through my hair, asserting, "Since we've been apart, I've had to do things for myself again. I don't want to lose my independence a third time."

"Third time?"

"Yes. First my parents. Then you. Now I have it back. I don't want to lose it once more."

Fear fills me. I take her admission personally. I seethe, "You're grouping me together with your parents?"

"You're taking this the wrong way," she claims.

"Kind of hard not to," I grumble.
