Goose bumps break out on my skin. I'm unsure who I'm more afraid of, him or Noah. My gaze darts between them.

My father asks, "Noah, where's your laptop?"

"In the office."

"Well, don't sit on your ass. Go get it," my father orders.

Noah obeys, leaving the room.

My father goes to the bar and refills his scotch. He takes a large mouthful before spinning toward me. He points to my mother, declaring, "She's always been a worthless pain in my ass."

"You won't get away with this," I seethe.

He drinks more, then replies, "You're still naive."

"No, I'm not!" I claim, unsure why I'm bothering to fight with him.

He smirks. "Then tell me, dear bastard daughter of mine, who's going to know?"

My mother's dead eyes stare at me. A wave of grief and guilt rolls through me. I didn't do anything to save her. Not that I knew what Noah would do or how I could have stopped it, but it's just like the guilt I harbored all these years over not being able to help her get clean. And she might have been an addict, but she didn't deserve this. No matter what she did or how she hurt my father or me, it didn't justify this.

Noah returns to the room, carrying a laptop. He sets it on the four-top table and opens it. His fingers move over the keys, and he nods to my father. "All set."

My father demands, "What's the password to your and Riggs's accounts?"

I answer, "How would I know?"

He crosses his arms, pinning his disgust on me, accusing me, "Don't play dumb. You married him for his money, just like your mother married me for mine."

King Madden barks, then growls.

"Shh," I order, then reply, "That's not true!"

"Stop lying! Now, what's the password?" he demands.

I shake my head. "I don't know. I don't get involved with the finances."

Rage flares on his cheeks. He grabs the gun from Noah and points it at me. He threatens, "You have ten seconds to tell me the password."

King Madden's aggression gets louder.

My mouth turns dry, and my pulse skyrockets. I hug him tighter, unable to take my eyes off the gun barrel.

"Time's up," my father states.

Noah pushes the gun, and it drops to the floor. A loud bang erupts. A bullet flies through the air, tearing through the lower wall. He barks, "This isn't what we discussed! Don't be stupid! Until we have the money, she's valuable."

Red grows hotter on my father's cheeks. He seethes, "I want my money!"

"Calm down," Noah orders. "You'll get it. But don't make a mistake. We stick to the plan."

More fear hits me. I don't know what the plan is, nor do I want to find out. Without debating, I jump off the couch and run toward the elevator.

"Grab her!" my father orders.

I reach for the button, and pain shoots into my left butt cheek. I scream, "Ow!"

"Dumb bitch," Noah mutters.
