I try to reach for the button, but everything starts to spin. King Madden falls from my arms, growling. My knees turn to mush, and I collapse to the floor.

Everything turns blurry. I try to move but I can't. King Madden jumps around me, then curls beside my face, whining.

The sound of their voices changes, as if they're in a tunnel.

My father states, "Send Riggs the message."

"It's too soon," Noah declares.

"It's not," my father insists.

Noah says, "It is. And I've not had my fun yet."

My father asserts, "You can do whatever you want with her after I get my money. Now send the fucking text!"

Noah's voice turns muffled, growing quieter until I hear nothing except King Madden's whine. Then I'm pulled to the couch, unable to stop them from moving me.

Someone lifts me. I think it's Noah, but I can't be sure. A white furball jumps on me, and King Madden snuggles between the couch and my limp body. Drool slides out of my mouth, slipping down my chin.

So much time passes that I wonder if I'm dead. Then the muffled noises come back, and the blurriness fades.

My mother's lifeless eyes stare at me. The dark-red blood around her is no longer fresh. The few spots of her untainted skin have no color left.

King Madden licks my cheek, and I realize my tears are still flowing. I try to reach for him, but I'm paralyzed.

The only words I can process are when they mention Riggs. And I wish he'd come to find me, but I know it's not happening. Noah knew what he was doing when he took me, and my fate is clear. I'm going to end up just like my mother.

Riggs

Kalim's driver utilizes the universal remote to get through the security at the parking garage. He finds a space on the fourth level near the elevator and turns off the engine.

I call Jones.

"Hey," he answers.

I ask, "Did you tap into it? Are we all set?"

He replies, "I just got in. You're good to go."

"Are you sure?" I question. My rage is so hot, I know I'm not leaving that building until I take care of Noah. If I have to pull the gun from Kalim, I will. And I don't need any evidence of being here.

Jones grunts. "Am I ever not sure?"

"Good. Stay tuned," I order. I slide my phone into my pocket and turn to Kalim. "He's cut the security footage. We're good to go."

Kalim pauses. "Are you sure your guy's good?"

I cross my arms. "Are you seriously questioning me about this?"

He puts his hands in the air. "I'm just asking. We can't afford to make any mistakes. I know my guys and their abilities. No offense, but I don't know anything about your contact."

"He's a genius. You have nothing to worry about," I assure him.

He studies me for a moment.

"You don't," I insist.
