He calms his voice. "I'll watch her. Go clean up."

My rational side takes over. I go into the bathroom, scrub my hands until I can't see any more blood, then rush back to Blakely.

King Madden jumps up on my leg, and I pet him for a quick second, praising, "It's okay, buddy. Good boy." I pull Blakely into my arms. I put my fingers on her pulse, needing reassurance she's still alive. When I find a pulse, a bit of relief shoots through me.

I turn my attention back on Hugh, snarling, "What did you give her?"

A sinister smile forms on his face. He claims, "Nothing that she didn't deserve."

I reprimand, "She's your daughter, you motherfucker."

He grunts. "No, she's not."

"God, you're a bastard," I say.

He adds, "Actually, she's the bastard, seeing that Madelyn couldn't keep her legs together."

I glance down at the dead corpse in front of me, then back at Hugh, realizing what he's saying. I question, "Blakely's not yours?"

His face hardens.

I tug her tighter to my chest, demanding, "What did you give her?"

He stays quiet.

Kalim says, in a non-emotional voice, "Looks like he's not going to tell us, but there's a syringe over there. Should I get rid of the trash, Riggs?"

There's no hesitation. I reply, "Don't ask me stupid questions."

Without flinching, Kalim shoots Hugh between the eyes.

He drops to the ground, his body creating a loud thud. More blood pools on the wood floor.

I pick up my pet and rise. King Madden stays on my heels. I glance at Hugh's dead body, then nod to the pet purse on the table. I order Kalim, "Put King Madden in that."

He takes the bag and crouches to the ground. "Come here, buddy."

But King Madden won't leave me. He's jumping up, his tail wagging.

Kalim finally grabs him and puts him in the bag. He zips him in, and I take the bag from him. I go to the elevator, declaring, "We've got to clean this mess up. I'll call my guy."

Kalim claims, "No, Riggs. My guys are downstairs. I've got this." He stares at Blakely, stating, "My private medical team's on standby. Any equipment needed, they have at their disposal. The hospital isn't the best place considering the circumstances."

I glance back at all the blood and nod. The hospital means questions. And Blakely's too famous for those to be asked. I question, "Are they in the city?"

"Yes. Go to the top level. An SUV is waiting for you," he informs me.

"Thanks," I say and step onto the elevator.

Kalim bends down and picks the syringe off the floor. He states, "I assume this is the date rape drug. Give this to the doctor. I'll stop by as soon as I'm done here." He slides it into the pocket of King Madden's bag and zips it.

I nod, staying silent, hugging my wife closer to me. I kiss her head as the doors shut, and I hit the button for the parking garage. The elevator moves, and I murmur in her ear, "I'm sorry, pet. I love you. Everything is going to be okay, I promise." Yet the fear inside me is at an all-time high.

"Come on, pet," Riggs murmurs. He brushes his lips against the back of my hand.
