"Sure." He leads me into an empty room. It's small, and there's a fireplace, a few pieces of furniture, and soft lighting. He says to Kalim, "You stay outside," then shuts the door.

We sit on a love seat in front of the fire. Colton props his feet on the ottoman and I do the same. He slings his arm around me and inquires, "You aren't having fun, are you?"

"Why do you say that?"

He stares at me. "This isn't your scene." He takes a big sip of his drink.

"Has it always been your scene?" I ask.

He shrugs. "Not sure if I'd say that, but you get used to things."

Something in me doubts that. "Do you?"

He peers at me closer. "Are you referring to Noah running your life or all the strangers who want a piece of you?"

I grimace, muttering, "You make it sound so amazing."

He stares at the fire, takes several sips, and then reveals, "There are things about this business that will make you feel on top of the world. Then there are others..."

I blurt out, "Do you hate Noah?"

He sniffs hard, swirling the whiskey in his tumbler. His eyes turn darker.

I soften my tone, adding, "You don't have to answer my question."

He shakes his head and turns so he's facing me. He props his knee on the couch, then states, "No one has ever point-blank asked me that. But yes. I think I do hate him."

"Why do you stay with him?"

Colton glances at the ceiling, then answers, "He's one of the best. But it doesn't matter. I'm in a contract. And once you sign with Noah Kingsley, you're in it for life. There's no escaping." He finishes the rest of his drink.

My stomach flips, and the air turns stale in my lungs. The thought of not having a choice to work with Noah or not suffocates me.

Riggs made sure I could get out if I wanted.

What if it doesn't hold up?

Why am I thinking this? My career is just getting started, and Noah's doing his job.

Riggs negotiated. He made sure I was protected.

My heart beats faster thinking about how Riggs diligently went through every word of the numerous contracts the agents presented. He spent hours with them and his attorney to ensure I had the deal I wanted.

Colton tilts his head. "I can see a million thoughts spinning in your mind."

I blurt out, "You should have Riggs look at your contract if you want out. He's really smart. He negotiated mine and swears I have several get-out clauses."

Colton licks his lips. A fire burns in his eyes, but then he frowns.

I ask, "What's wrong?"

He goes to the built-in bar and picks up a decanter. He pours the liquid into his tumbler and spins. He leans against the wall and mutters, "You don't live if you leave Noah."

Goose bumps break out on my skin. "What do you mean?"

He sarcastically chuckles, then drinks half his whiskey. He stares at me with a sad expression. "You're way too innocent, superstar."

The hole in my gut widens. "Meaning?"
