“What? It’s Saturday. It’s my day off.”

“Then feel free to go enjoy yourself,” he drawled, quickly setting to work like the dutiful apprentice he was, “Because I have to work on Saturdays.”

“Joe.”

He shook his head. “No.”

Reaching for the buttons on my blouse, I flicked the top one open. “I bet I can change your mind?”

“Out.” He slammed the hood of the car down. “Get out now.”

“Fine, fine.” I relented. “I’ll be good, I swear.”

Keeping Joey companywhile he worked turned out to be a very un-boring experience. He knew his way around a car almost as well as my father did, and that wasn’t an easy feat.

Straddling the creeper, I had spent most of the afternoon wheeling back and forth, while we chatted shit and exchanged banter.

He was explicitly clean, too, I found myself noticing, as I watched him clean as he worked. Tidying everything up and putting every nut, bolt, and tool back in its place before he finished up.

“So, what’s the plan?” I asked from my perch on my father’s desk. Legs swinging, I reached into the large tub of lollypops, and scooped up a red one. “What do you want to do for the rest of the night?”

“I should probably go home and check on things,” he admitted, keeping his back to me, as he scrubbed his hands at the sink. “I’ve been here since early this morning and I—“

“No,” I protested, unwrapping my lollypop and popping it in my mouth. “You can’t go home.”

He sighed heavily. “Molloy.”

“It’s Saturday night,” I moaned. “And I’ve waited all day for you to be done.”

“I know, and I get that, but I have responsibilities at home.” He turned to look at me. “I’ll walk you home first.”

“I brought the car.”

He smiled. “How’s that going for you?”

“Shocking,” I admitted. “I can’t get past third gear.”

He laughed.

“Listen.” Springing off my perch, I prowled towards him, giving him my best moves, as I tried to look as enticing as possible. “How about if we just—”

“Ihaveto go home,” he warned, arms coming around my waist when I reached his chest. “It’s not a matter of want, it’s a matter of need, okay?”

“Fine.” Letting my head fall forward against his chest, I muttered a string of curses under my breath. “Or,” I quickly added when an idea came to me. “Since you’re finishing work an hour earlier than usual, you could come to my house and spend that hour with me, and I’ll drive you home afterwards.”

“You’lldriveme home?”

“It’ll be good practice. And you’ll still be home on time to do whatever it is that you need to do.”

“I don’t know, Molloy.”

“Mam’s not at home,” I hurried to say. “And Kev’s at one of those creepy sleepovers.”

I could see the temptation in his eyes. “Yeah?”

“Yeah, we would be all alone.” I went in for the kill. “In an empty house, with a big bed, and no distractions.”
