CHAPTER SIXTEEN

KARA

“Promise?”

The quip has already cleared my lips when Maximus clarifies the one detail I seemed to have missed.

He wasn’t asking an actual question.

So instead, my cute remark is a semi-scream. It rises up and out as he drives hard and deep. I rock my head back and let out another as his swollen stalk pushes at me, stretching me. His rolling thrusts are erotic taunts, rubbing parts of me with merciless rhythm. Tender parts. Quivering parts.

The parts that throb faster and faster, rushing to catch up with his powerful tempo, until every throb of his gets an answering torque of mine.

Until he’s groaning into my neck and climaxing into my core. Until I’m clenching and fluttering and flying with him. Until we’re sweating and kissing and groaning together, as our bodies speak what will never reach the boundaries of words. A love that shatters those frameworks like the blinding lightning it is. A storm I never thought I’d know—or if I did, would only have one dance in. Rain like this, full and clean and drenching, was never meant to be enjoyed by an incubus’s bride.

This man wants to ensure that’ll never happen. Maximus wants to make mehisbride. But how have I reacted? Like a mash-up of Eric Cartman and the girl who turned into a blueberry inWilly Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. I’m even tempted to let that energy ride as he gradually eases back on his force, making it easier to moon like I’ve really turned into a big piece of the juicy fruit.

I have to shatter his illusion.

“Maximus.”

My soft but vital tone is the switch to his brake pedal.

His hips still. His face reverts to a scowl.

“Uh-oh,” he mutters. “Did we suddenly jump to finals week while I was wrecking you, Miss Valari?”

“Which, for the record, Ididenjoy,” I ensure with an impish smile.

“But?”

I take a long second to run fingertips over his breathtaking features. That high, firm rectangle of a forehead. The noble brows slashed against its base, hunching over his mesmerizing blues.

Mesmerizing—and unblinking.

The rest of him is equally still. My body has a tight grip on his, but he’s braced soundly on his thighs, poised and powerful. Pausing his whole being…waiting on me.

I pull in a deep breath. On the exhalation, I force words out.

“But you don’t have to do this.Wedon’t have to. That doesn’t mean I don’t want to…” The protest is a frantic tumble on my lips. “But if you need time to consider all of this, you have it. I’ll tell Mother we decided to go short on the courtship and long on the engagement. She’ll just have to d—”

The word clutches in my mouth as he presses a thumb to my lips. Or is it the vexed glitter in his eyes that’s turned me speechless?

“At the risk of pure redundancy, little demon…doyouneed more time to consider?”

When I pull in breath to properly protest, he taps his thumb at my mouth in gentle reprimand.

“Don’t blurt what you think I want to hear, Kara. Everything you’ve already said… I listened. And I get it.”

Now he rubs that big rough pad from one corner of my lips to the other. At the same time, he undulates his hips just enough to tell me he isn’t softening anytime soon. In more ways than the obvious.

“Our love is bigger than rings and ceremonies and cake, okay?”

I burst with a teasing gasp. “Wait, now. No hating on cake.”

“Never.” With my outcry shooing away his thumb, the way is clear for him to peck my lips. “There are just easier ways to get it.”

“You mean instead of signing on to tolerate my family for the rest of your days?”
