A hand wraps around mine. Serafina. I look at her, and she meets my gaze head-on, giving me a small nod of reassurance. She might not know sign language, but her intention is clear. We’ll be all right.

Though once we’re all in the car, I’m not sure how true Serafina’s intention is. How can we be all right when we’re being held at gunpoint and kidnapped?

There is one thing I can appreciate, though. At least Serafina is being nice. That’s something I can hold onto before I die.

CHAPTER12

Dario

The moment I step foot through my front door, I notice how quiet it is. I was dealing with some financial issues and looking forward to returning home. Returning to Pia.

But now, something in my gut tells me things are not all right.

I don’t hear the normal chatter between Adelina and Serafina. And those two are always talking to each other.

“I’m home,” I call out, but when no one answers, I start to get worried. I storm through the house, searching for my wife and sisters, but they’re nowhere to be found.

What happened? I hope they left to have a fun day out and forgot to tell me. I’d be pissed at them but would forgive them. My bigger fear is that Tommaso found Pia and took her, along with my sisters, to fuck me over as I did to him.

I immediately call Matteo. “I need you and your men out scouring the city. My wife and sisters are gone.”

“Right on it. Anything I should keep an eye out for?” That’s the good thing about Matteo—he’s quick to agree to help and always efficient about it. I used to look down on motorcycle clubs, but Matteo’s loyalty is nothing like I’ve ever seen before.

“You know what my sisters look like.” He’s only met them once before, at a party I hosted a year ago. “If you see anyone women who look like them, I want to hear about it. I want to know their exact location. I’m going out and looking for them myself. And let me know if you hear anything.”

“I can do that. I’ll send some of my men out, too.”

“Thank you.” I hang up before he can reply. Then I send out a message to my men to start scouring the city. Once I’ve finished, I leave, intent on finding my wife and sisters.

First thing, I check the beach. Maybe they’re just relaxing there. I can only hope so.

But my hope is quickly dashed when I don’t see them. It’s a private beach, so there aren’t many other people around. None of them are my sisters. None of them are Pia.

Pia. The thought that her father somehow found her fills me with dread. I promised to keep her safe, and I intend to keep to that promise. I’ve grown used to her presence around the house, even though it’s only been a week. I can’t imagine losing her so soon. She’s mine. And I’ll do anything to get her back.

Done checking the beach, I rush back up to my house, get into my car, and drive toward the city. I drive slowly, even though it pisses off the people behind me. I get a lot of honks, but I don’t fucking care. I’ll check every street if I have to.

I drive down one street, then another, and another until things start blurring together. I pay attention to the people on the sidewalks, out shopping and having fun on this sunny afternoon. Everyone is all smiles while I’m stuck in my car, worried. I’d trade every single person I’ve seen to get my wife and sisters back.

It’s not until I’ve turned down another street—I’ve been down so many I can’t even keep track anymore—that Matteo calls.

“Do you have them?” I ask after answering.

“No.” I deflate at his words. It’s fuzzy on his end, and he’s yelling to be heard over the wind. “But they were spotted in a car heading out of the city. One of my guys recognized your sisters in the backseat. They were in a black sedan.” He rattles off a license plate number. “I followed my man’s directions, and now, I’m tailing them. The car is a few ahead of me. Thought you’d want to know. I’m only on my motorcycle, and there’s no way I can stop them in this. I’d hurry and catch up.” He tells me the street he’s on, and thankfully, it’s close to where I am.

“I’m on my way.” I hang up and accelerate, careening off. No more going slow. I’ll be a speed demon to catch up to them.

It doesn’t take long before I find Matteo on his motorcycle. A few of his men surround him, and I give him a nod as I pull up close.

He points to the black sedan up ahead.

I rev my engine and speed up to it until I’m right next to it. Glancing over, I see Adelina’s face pressed against the window. I relax slightly. At least one of my sisters is in there. I have to hope Serafina and Pia are, too.

Her eyes light up once she sees me. I motion for her not to move. I can’t risk her giving me away. I need to pull their car over, but I can’t risk Pia and my sisters getting hurt.

I pull back until I’m near Matteo again. Rolling down my window, I yell so he can hear me over the wind and roar of his motorcycle. “Surround that car. Try to get them to pull over.”

He nods, then motions for his men to follow him. They zoom up to the sedan and form a circle around it, with Matteo in the front and his men on the sides and behind. I speed up until I’m next to the sedan and Matteo’s men are on the far side next to me. The driver looks over, and when he sees me, he grimaces and tries moving over to hit my car. Matteo’s men and I move, getting out of the way, causing the sedan to hit the bank of the expressway and go toppling over. The car flips onto its back, stopping its movement.
