I screech to a halt as Matteo and his men stop their motorcycles near the wreck. Then I run out of my car, my gun drawn, and approach the steaming sedan. The driver is crawling out of the window, and. I shoot him dead before he can take another step. His body flops to the ground.

I crouch down to look at the back window.

I see her. Pia and breathe out a sigh of relief. She’s between my two sisters. Pia’s alive. Adelina is, too.

It’s Serafina, who I’m not sure about. Her eyes aren’t open.

I wrench open the back door.

“Dario,” Adelina says.

Serafina is closest to me. I reach over and check her pulse. She’s alive, too, but her eyes still haven’t opened.

“Be careful!” Adelina screams. I frown, and then I see him. Another man is in the passenger seat, scrambling out of the car. Before I can get up, Matteo runs around the car and shoots the man dead.

“Are you hurt?” I ask Pia and Adelina. They both shake their heads. “Good. Good.” I motion toward Serafina. “I need to get her out of here first.” I undo her seat belt and catch her before she hits the car's roof. Matteo crouches beside me and helps me pull her out. “Try to get her to wake up,” I tell him. Then I reach back into the car and undo Pia’s seatbelt. She gasps as I catch her and help her out of the car. She clings to me as I help Adelina out.

Adelina rushes to Serafina’s side. “Is she alive?”

Matteo is tapping Serafina’s face. “She has a pulse, so yes. She’s just not waking up.” He grabs a water bottle from his bag on the back of his motorcycle and pours a little bit onto her face.

Pia clutches me harder. I wrap my arms around her and pull her close.

We all watch as Matteo tries to get Serafina to wake up. With another tap on her cheek, she finally wakes. Well, she jerks upright and lets out a curse, but still, she’s awake.

She blinks, looking at Matteo. “You saved me.” She’s never sounded so breathless before.

He smiles slightly. “The least I could do.” He looks at Adelina. “Your sister will be fine.”

Adelina pulls Serafina into a hug, but Serafina doesn’t look away from Matteo, who’s gotten up and turned to his bike. Though I notice Matteo sneaking glances at Adelina, not Serafina.. Adelina doesn’t even notice. She’s too busy hugging Serafina and saying she’s so glad she’s alive.

I look at Pia. “Are you hurt?” I look over her body.

She cups my face in her hands and shakes her head.I’m fine, she signs, placing her hand over my heart.

“I’m fine, too,” I tell her, and she visibly relaxes. “Pia, I was so scared.” I never admit fear, but I want Pia to know. I want her to know she matters to me. “I thought your father had found you.”

They were taking us to him,she signs.

“I promised you I wouldn’t let that happen.” I kiss her quickly. “I always keep my promises.”

She smiles and burrows her face into my neck.

Then it dawns on me. We’re still on the side of the road with two dead men nearby.

“Matteo, can you get your men to dispose of the bodies?”

He looks away from Adelina. “Yes, I can do that.”

Serafina reaches out for him. “You’re leaving so soon?”

“Duty calls,” he tells her. Then he walks away, directing his men on what to do.

I stand up, but Pia doesn’t let go of me, so I scoop her into my arms and carry her to my car. Once I know she’s safe, I help my sisters into the car. I trust Matteo to handle the dead bodies. I drive away, ready to get my family home safe and sound.

“That was crazy,” Serafina says on the drive back home. “The car just flipped over like that. I thought I was going to die.”

“I thought that, too,” Adelina adds.
