“Don’t worry. You don’t need to be afraid. Just come with me.” I step back and drop my arms. She’s free to run, but I’m hoping she chooses the wise thing.

Nope. She runs.

I laugh as I begin to chase her. She’s a fun one, this mythos girl. None of the rumors about her do her justice.

Pia picks up her pace as she runs out of the kitchen and enters the house's foyer. The front door is just a few feet away. She could make it out, though there’s no way she’s getting away from me.

Then she skids to a stop. I slow down and observe her. Then I see what made her stop. Her father enters the foyer from another room and steps in front of the door, two guards with him.

Tommaso meets my eyes. “Kill him.”

His guards lift their guns and point them at me. I can handle a lot but not bullets. I’m still mortal, after all. What concerns me more, though, is that Pia is right in front of me, right in the line of fire.

Her father wouldn’t risk shooting with her right there, would he?

He did keep her locked up her entire life, so maybe he doesn’t care that much about her. But I do. I don’t know Pia at all, and yes, I’m doing this to piss off Tommaso, but I do care about her as a person. I want her as my wife.

Might as well start showing her.

I grab her arm, pull her out of the way, and shove her to the ground as the guards begin raining down fire. I throw myself on top of her to protect her from the bullets. The stairwell is partially blocking us, keeping me alive for now.

Pia flinches away from me.

“Sorry. Just trying to protect you, princess.”

She stills before looking up at me questioningly.

“You’re mine. Don’t you know that yet?” I lean down and kiss her cheek. “Now, stay here while I deal with these fuckers.”

The gunfire ceases for a second. Long enough for me to get the upper hand.

I whip my gun from my jacket, stand up, and begin firing. I shoot the two guards, killing them instantly like it’s nothing. And it really is nothing for me.

Tommaso runs out of the way and finds cover in another room.

The thing is, I want that bastard alive. I want him to know I have his daughter. How sweet of an idea is that? I begin to laugh.

Pia is still lying on the ground, looking stunned.

I offer her my hand. “Ready to go?” My eyes rake over her in her simple wedding dress. Shame it doesn’t give me a good sense of her body, but I can tell by her face how fucking beautiful she is. It’s no wonder Tommaso kept her hidden away. If she were out walking around, every man would want her.

She pushes herself up, not taking my hand, I notice, and stands for a moment, just looking at me.

“Pia,” I say, glancing around, “we should really go. Your father’s men will be on us soon if we don’t leave now. You do want to leave, don’t you? I’ve heard how he’s kept you locked up. Don’t you want to experience freedom?”

She points at me, lifting her eyebrows.

“You’ll experience freedom with me,” I explain. “As my wife.”

The little bit of color in her face drains away. She begins to frantically shake her head.

“Sorry, no isn’t an option, princess. You’re coming with me.” I grab her hand and tug her behind me. She digs her heels in but no matter. I just keep pulling her behind me until she stumbles and begins walking.

I walk us through the front door of Tommaso’s mansion like it’s a normal Tuesday afternoon—like I own the motherfucking place.

The only issue is the guards outside.

Two of them stand on the front lawn. Tommaso’s mansion sits on acres of land, including a long driveway ahead of us and beautiful lawns on either side with hedges and flowers blooming. He keeps a nice place; I’ll give him that. Props to his gardener. But I have a nice home, too, and I’m anxious to bring Pia there.
