“Glad you think so.” She pulls back and stands, grabbing the jersey and pulling it over her head.

“Can I get a picture of you wearing just that? I want to memorialize this moment.” That’s code for “I want to jerk off to it for months.”

She worries her bottom lip. “I don’t know, what if someone sees it?”

“I would never show anyone.”

“All right.” She poses for me.

I snap a picture, clicking the little heart so it will appear in my favorites folder on my phone.

When I’m done, she grabs her robe off the floor and slides it back on. “I’d better get back to my room. We have an early start.”

“Stay. I can pay you back.” The disappointment that flares in my chest is a surprise even to me. I wish she could stay the night, but it’s risky.

“If only. Only a couple more days.” She makes her way to the door and gets up on her tiptoes to look out the hole into the hall. “All clear.” She turns around to face me. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“All right.” The words “thank you” almost leave my lips, but that would be weird, right? “Counting down the seconds.”

She smiles then opens the door and darts out into the hall. I lock the door behind her and go to lie back on the bed.

Though I’m more relaxed than I have been all week, it takes a while for me to drift off to sleep because I can’t get Shayna out of my head.

Twenty-Four

Shayna

“Woo-hoo!”

The celebratory sound comes from the doorway of the rehab room. Lee sprints across the room with a contagious smile, arms wide open. He lifts me by the waist and spins me around.

I smack his shoulders. “Put me down. My god. What are you thinking?” I push at his hands on my waist and he sets me on the ground.

“I’m cleared to play!”

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen Lee this happy, and it’s so great to see after the hard work he put in. I want to hug him and kiss him and praise him, but there are too many prying eyes. “Congrats!”

“It’s all because of you.” He reaches for me, but his hand drops.

I wave off this comment. “You did all the work.”

Truthfully, Lee is the hardest-working athlete I’ve ever worked with. He had his moments of moping around and feeling sorry for himself, but they were few and far between. It’s clear that once he sets his mind on a goal, he’ll do whatever it takes to achieve it.

“Well, you can be very motivating.” His words drip with innuendo.

“Is that so?”

“I’m not interrupting anything, am I?”

I startle when Dr. Carlisle walks into the room. “Not at all. Lee was just telling me the good news.”

He looks between us for a beat. “Yes, he insisted on being the one to tell you.”

I shift in place. “I guess we were both working toward the same goal…”

“Yeah, because it’s all due to her. She got me back on the field,” Lee says, staring at me a little too adoringly.

I smile, trying to convey to Lee to cut it back a little. I don’t know if I’m being paranoid or if Dr. Carlisle is staring between the two of us like his lunch was stolen from the break room fridge and we have tuna fish breath.
